(CLO) An explosion in Moscow on Tuesday killed two people, including Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia's Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Forces.
The blast was believed to have been caused by a bomb hidden in an electric scooter, according to Russia's Investigative Committee. Mr Kirillov and his assistant died outside an apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt, about 7km southeast of the Kremlin.
Russia's Investigative Committee said the incident was being investigated as a crime. Photos from the scene showed a shattered entrance to a building, strewn with rubble and two bodies lying in the bloodied snow. Police have now cordoned off the scene.

The Russian Investigative Committee also confirmed that the explosion shook the first floor of a residential building on Ryazansky Avenue. The incident damaged the glass facade of the first four floors of the building.
"Investigators, forensic experts and operational services are working at the scene," commission spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said in a statement. "Investigative and search operations are underway to establish all the circumstances surrounding this crime."
The Russian Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Corps (RKhBZ), which Kirillov heads, is a special task force that deals with situations of radioactive, chemical and biological contamination.
