The FPOe won 28.8% of the vote, beating the ruling People's Party (OeVP) (which came in second with 26.3% of the vote), according to near-final results.
However, all other parties have so far refused to form a coalition with FPOe leader Herbert Kickl, 56. "Today we have written a part of history together. We have opened the door to a new era," Kickl told supporters in the capital Vienna.
Like far-right parties elsewhere in Europe, the FPOe has seen its popularity surge, fuelled by voter discontent over migration, inflation and Covid-19 restrictions.
