On Facebook, Mr. Lee Hsien Yang, the younger brother of former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said that the UK had determined that he faced the risk of being persecuted by the Singaporean government and could not safely return to the country.

"I had to resort to my last resort and apply for refugee protection. I am still a Singaporean citizen and hope that one day I can safely return to my homeland," he said.

The Singapore government has denied allegations that he was persecuted, according to Channel News Asia.

Mr. Lee Hsien Yang left Singapore on June 15, 2022 after the police asked him and his wife, Ms. Lee Hock-fen, to assist in the investigation and has not returned since.

The British High Commission in Singapore has not commented on the information.

Mr. Lee Hsien Yang and his sister Lee Wei Ling, who died on October 9, were still at odds with their elder brother Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore's prime minister from 2004 to May 2024, over how to handle their father's shared home after Mr. Lee Kuan Yew died in 2015.

Mr. Lee Hsien Yang said he had applied for asylum protection since 2022 and could not return to attend his sister's funeral for fear of trouble.

Last week, he said he would apply to demolish Lee Kuan Yew's house in accordance with his father's wishes.

The Singapore government announced that it will consider the issue related to the above real estate in the coming time.
