In 2024, the recovery rate compared to 2019 of Vietnamese tourism will reach 98%, higher than other famous tourist destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia.
Based on updated data of The ASEAN Secretariat and the National Tourism Administration pointed out that Vietnam is the country with the best tourism recovery rate in Southeast Asia in 2024. In 2024, Vietnam welcomed 17.6 million international visitors, a recovery rate of 98% compared to 2019 - the time before the Covid-19 pandemic occurred. Other countries in the region have lower recovery rates such as Thailand (88%), Singapore (86%), and the Philippines (72%).
If calculating the number of international arrivals in 2024, Vietnam will surpass Singapore (16.5 million arrivals), rising to third place in the ranking of countries receiving the most international visitors in Southeast Asia in 2024. The top two are Thailand with 35 million arrivals and Malaysia with 24.5 million arrivals. The number of international visitors to Vietnam is higher than Indonesia (nearly 14 million arrivals) and the Philippines (nearly 6 million arrivals).
According to statistics from Agoda , Vietnam and Malaysia are the two leading destinations in the region in terms of the percentage of guests booking sustainable, environmentally friendly tours. In the top 10 most attractive cities for this type of tourism, Vietnam has three cities: Da Nang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City. The number of accommodation searches from international visitors increased by 139% compared to the same period last year. In particular, the number of visitors from China increased by nearly 300%.
Phu Quoc become the top choice destination for international travelers in 2025, with accommodation searches increasing by 266% compared to 2024. Data from the platform also recorded significant growth from travelers in other source markets such as South Korea (up 94%) and Taiwan (up 123%).
Vietnam officially opened its doors to international visitors after the pandemic from March 15, 2022. Since then, the tourism industry has made significant recovery steps, increasing from 3.7 million visitors in 2022 to 12.6 million in 2023; 17.6 million in 2024; nearly equal to 18 million in the golden age of 2019.
By 2025, Vietnam's tourism industry aims to welcome 22-23 million international visitors. According to tourism experts, this is a high target but also demonstrates the determination to make tourism a key economic sector of the country.
