Reuters reported that the charges against Hunter Biden were brought as a result of an investigation by David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware, President Joe Biden's home state. Weiss was appointed by President Donald Trump (2017-2021).
Mr. Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden
The investigation began in 2018 and in December 2020, Hunter Biden publicly disclosed that he was under investigation.
The Washington Post, citing court records on June 20, reported that Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to two counts of tax evasion in 2017 and 2018. The total amount of tax involved is said to be about $1.2 million. Prosecutors plan to recommend a two-year prison sentence for these two crimes. Biden's representatives previously said he had paid the unpaid taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The remaining charge is related to firearms, and Hunter Biden has agreed to enter a rehabilitation program to avoid prosecution. If he completes the conditions of the program, the charge will be expunged from his record.
The allegations stem from Hunter Biden’s purchase of a gun in late 2018, a time when he reportedly regularly abused crack cocaine. He hid his drug use when he filed the paperwork to purchase the gun, leading to charges of perjury and subsequent illegal gun possession. Hunter Biden kept the gun for less than two weeks before his girlfriend threw it away.
Former Twitter executive: Blocking posts about President Biden's son was a "mistake"
Hunter Biden's attorney Christopher Clark said the deal would "resolve" the Justice Department's longstanding criminal investigation into the president's son. "I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for the mistakes he made during his difficult and addictive period. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward," Clark said.
The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill love their son and support him in rebuilding his life. The leader did not comment further on the allegations.
Hunter Biden’s guilty plea is expected to have implications for the 2024 presidential race, where his father is a leading Democratic candidate. Former President Donald Trump, who is a leading Republican candidate for next year’s election, has frequently complained about the Justice Department’s handling of Hunter Biden’s troubles. Attorney General Merrick Garland has said he will give Weiss full investigative authority and not interfere with the prosecution.
