Prosecute drug-positive driver who hit and killed 3 family members

A car driver tested positive for drugs and drove a pickup truck recklessly, hitting a motorbike, causing the tragic deaths of 3 people in a family.

On February 17, news from the People's Procuracy of Buon Ma Thuot City (Dak Lak Province) said that it had issued an indictment to prosecute defendant Tran Doan Tung (born in 1979, residing in Ea Kenh Commune, Krong Pak District, Dak Lak Province) for violating regulations on road traffic participation, as prescribed in Clause 3, Article 260 of the Penal Code.

According to the indictment, at about 6:15 a.m. on August 2, 2024, Mr. Tung drove a car to the Traffic Police Department of Dak Lak Provincial Police to handle administrative violations in the field of road traffic.

At about 6:52 a.m. the same day, Mr. Tung drove to Km 140+400, National Highway 26 (through Ea Tu commune, Buon Ma Thuot city), driving at a speed of 70 km/hour.

At this time, Mr. Tung observed that there were no cars coming from the opposite direction, but there were still motorbikes and scooters. Among them, there was a motorbike driven by Ms. Quach Thi L. (born in 1988, residing in Ea Kar district, Dak Lak province) carrying her husband and children, Mr. Vu Van H. (born in 1983) and Vu Tuan K. (born in 2011).

After turning on the left turn signal, Tung drove over the solid line, encroaching on the left side of the road to overtake the car traveling in the same direction ahead.

Due to not being in control of the steering wheel, overtaking in an unsafe manner, and not ensuring safety, Tung's car crashed into a motorbike driven by Ms. Quach Thi L. As a result, 3 people on the motorbike died and 2 vehicles were damaged.

The test results confirmed that Tung was positive for drugs.

It is known that in 2009, Mr. Tung was sent by the People's Committee of Krong Pak district to the Dak Lak province's Center for Labor and Social Education for a period of 24 months.

On December 21, 2015, Mr. Tung was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison by the People's Court of Krong Pak district for the crime of extortion.
