Roni Kriboy, 25, was a surprise addition to the list of hostages released on Sunday, joining 13 women and children previously agreed in Israel-Hamas hostage swap talks.
Kriboy holds dual Russian and Israeli citizenship. Hamas says he was freed partly because of this, because of their high regard for Russia.
Kriboy's family said he went missing while working as a stagehand at a music event in Israel, before being captured by Hamas militants in an attack on October 7. A week later, Israeli authorities determined that he was among about 240 people arrested.
Kriboy's aunt, Yelena Magid, said in an interview with Israel's Kan radio that she spoke to Kriboy after his return.
“He recounted being captured by terrorists, who kept him in a bombed building,” she said, referring to the Israeli shelling, adding that he had suffered a head injury at the time.
"He escaped and hid alone for four days. He tried to reach the border. Finally, the Gazans caught him and returned him to the rebels," Kriboy's aunt added.
