(CLO) On February 5, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender athletes from competing in women's sports and asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to adjust related regulations before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

"From now on, women's sports will be for women only," Mr. Trump announced at the White House before signing the order, witnessed by dozens of female and child athletes. "With this order, the war against women's sports is over."

Under the order, the US government has the right to deny federal funding to schools that allow transgender athletes to compete on women's teams.

"If you let men join women's sports teams or use women's locker rooms, you will be investigated and risk losing federal funding," Mr. Trump warned.

In addition, President Trump also asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio to pressure the IOC to change the regulations before the 2028 Olympics, calling it "a completely ridiculous problem that needs to end."

In addition, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was directed to deny visa applications "from men who pose as female athletes and attempt to fraudulently enter the United States to participate in the Olympics."

The order is the latest step in the Trump administration’s policy of restricting transgender rights. In his inaugural address on January 20, he announced that the US government would only recognize two genders, male and female, and rescind all previous policies related to a third gender.

Just days after taking office, Mr. Trump signed an executive order banning transgender people from serving in the military and restricting gender reassignment procedures for people under the age of 19.

The ban continues to spark fierce debate in the US and internationally. LGBTQ+ rights organizations have condemned the order as discriminatory, while supporters say it is a necessary step to protect fairness in women's sports.

The IOC previously issued new guidelines for transgender athletes in 2021, allowing international sports federations to set their own rules rather than applying a fixed testosterone threshold. The rule has been controversial, especially after cases of transgender athletes winning women's competitions.
