Since the day he discovered his child had bone cancer after being hospitalized to have a cast put on his broken arm, Ho Van Thia (Pa Co ethnic, A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue) cannot remember how many times he cried when seeing his child suffering from a fever.
The number of fevers increased in inverse proportion to the money the poor father saved from selling buffaloes and cows to take care of his child in the hospital.
Not daring to eat, saving money to treat cancer for child
During the days of following his child to be treated for bone cancer at the Pediatric Center, Hue Central Hospital, Mr. Ho Van Thia said he did not dare to eat because he had to save money for his child's treatment.
Mr. Thia said that more than a year ago, Ho Th.TP (13 years old, Mr. Thia's daughter) fell and broke her arm while playing with her friends.
The family took P. to A Luoi District Medical Center, where the doctor said the child's condition was normal, so he took the child home for monitoring.
Two months later, seeing that the child's hand was swollen, the family decided to take the child to Hue Central Hospital for examination.
Two days after P. was admitted to the hospital, the doctor informed the family that he had bone cancer and had to have his arm amputated.
"At that time, I couldn't believe my child's condition. The whole family was devastated, but we tried to tell ourselves that we had to save our child at all costs," said Mr. Thia.
Mr. Thia and his wife work hard all year round, growing corn and cassava every day, so their income is not much.
P.'s condition became more and more serious, and Mr. Thia was forced to quit his job to have time to take care of him at Hue Central Hospital, more than 80km from the mountains where he lived.
Returning to the city for medical treatment, the cost of treatment became more expensive, the burden piled up more and more on the shoulders of the poor couple.
For Mr. Thia, every day at the hospital is another worry about the cost of medicine and hospital fees. Every day at mealtime, the poor father leaves his child with someone else to take care of and goes to the hospital hallway to see if anyone is giving out charity rice, then asks for two boxes. On days when there is no charity rice or only one box of rice, he gives it to his child and goes hungry.
"Even if I have to sell all my house, all my land, and have nothing left, I will still do it. I don't want to lose my child," said Mr. Thia.
