There is an innovative ecosystem at Petrovietnam

Trusted by Petrovietnam to build an innovative ecosystem for the Oil and Gas industry, in recent times, the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI) has implemented many scientific research projects and applied technology (Big Data, Platform, AI...) to help the Group quickly adapt to the trend of digital transformation and energy transition.

Where the intelligence of the Oil and Gas industry gathers

Since its inception, VPI has been identified as a gathering place for Petrovietnam’s leading scientists. VPI’s research and application results are the scientific basis for policy making, strategies, and decisions of Petrovietnam and its member units in activities of searching, exploring, exploiting, transporting, storing, processing, environmental safety, and economic management of oil and gas...

Petrovietnam Chairman of the Board of Directors Le Manh Hung introduced the Group's energy transition strategy to Party and State leaders.

After 46 years of construction and development, VPI has conducted research and development and provided scientific and technical services for the entire oil and gas industry chain. In the field of oil and gas exploration and exploitation alone, VPI has researched to clarify geological structures, assess the potential and oil and gas reserves of sedimentary basins; researched and applied solutions for exploitation management, improved oil recovery coefficient, and managed safe and effective mine exploitation...

In recent years, in order for Petrovietnam to quickly adapt to the energy transition trend, VPI has taken on the responsibility of researching and anticipating the energy transition trend in the oil and gas industry such as: CO2 capture, utilization and storage technology (CCS/CCUS); production of green, environmentally friendly products; processing of gas with high CO2 content; hydrogen; offshore wind power... From there, creating a scientific basis for Petrovietnam to contribute to realizing the Government's commitment at COP26 on Net Zero.

Some of VPI's outstanding products include developing a value chain of new products based on carbon nanomaterials, including: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the first time in the world, produced from natural gas with high CO2 content (30% CO2); Graphene produced from CNTs based on opening tubes by controlled oxidation-reduction and functionalization methods to suit different applications; Slow-release fertilizers coated with nanomaterials, capable of controlling the rate of nutrient release into water and soil; Lubricants containing additives based on graphene materials, helping to reduce fuel consumption by 5% and reduce emissions into the environment by 15% compared to traditional lubricants.

Regarding potential applications, VPI is also conducting research to exploit and effectively use natural gas with high CO2 content, especially gas from small, marginal fields (ineffective if collected by pipeline). Converting natural gas with high CO2 content into clean fuel by FGTC (Floating gas to chemicals) to produce methanol or FGTL (Floating gas to liquid) to produce clean gasoline, diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

On the other hand, VPI also studies CO2 emission reduction from power plants, petrochemical refineries, industrial zones near natural gas sources such as production of new materials (CNT/graphene) with applications for paint, asphalt, concrete and new, clean fuels (methanol, gasoline/diesel/SAF) depending on the amount of emissions to be reduced.

VPI pioneers in AI application

To accelerate the digital transformation process, VPI has been developing products that apply artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms (ML) to synthesize and analyze in-depth data in the oil and gas sector to improve operational efficiency, support decision making and promote sustainable development of Vietnam's energy industry.

Artificial intelligence applications are actively supporting scientific and technological research in the Oil and Gas industry.

In 2024, VPI deployed AI/Machine Learning applications to analyze data on oil and gas exploration and prospecting activities; build digital copies of sedimentary basins to clarify reservoir characteristics; identify areas with potential for oil and gas, helping to minimize risks and costs related to oil and gas exploration and prospecting activities. Similarly, in the field of oil and gas exploitation, VPI also deployed applications to optimize exploitation and improve oil recovery coefficients. For example, the tool "Building a solution to identify wells with abnormal operating modes for the Bach Ho field area" developed by VPI is capable of automatically detecting wells with abnormal operating modes, helping to improve work efficiency as well as accuracy in analysis; supporting exploitation management and exploitation forecasting.

For the oil and gas processing sector, VPI applies AI/Machine Learning to integrate and extend the value chain, effectively operate existing projects, including: Multi-dimensional integration - real-time change management to simulate and screen development scenarios for effective integration of new and existing assets; apply AI to optimize product and energy performance; build automatic reports to update new technology trends...

In addition, VPI is also researching the application of AI/Machine Learning in the field of electricity and renewable energy to build digital twins for existing power plants and apply them to offshore wind power; forecast power generation capacity; optimize the amount of electricity mobilized from the grid and stored electricity; build digital maps to propose potential locations for wind power projects and ports; build digital twins in transporting products through pipelines; apply digital twins in distribution and transportation outside the pipeline.

Up to now, VPI has basically completed the construction of the "Vietnam Petroleum Insights" (VPInsights) with the goal of meeting the needs of searching, researching and sharing complete and accurate data information, supporting situation forecasting and planning timely and effective solutions in the context of the constantly changing world energy industry.

For example, the application of VPInsights “Hydrogen” subsystem provides important information on hydrogen markets, products and technologies and optimizes the use of offshore wind power to produce green hydrogen... The chemical technology process database software (PEP-Yearbook) provides data and calculation information, supporting managers and investors in the process of planning, making business decisions, operating production and investing in projects...

It is known that each year, VPI not only undertakes important tasks of strategic consulting and science and technology assigned by Petrovietnam, but also coordinates with units in the Group to carry out hundreds of research and application contracts for immediate implementation in the production and business of units across the country. These applied scientific products not only directly increase the production and business efficiency of units but also benefit the country with millions of USD each year.

It can be seen that VPI is not only a strategic development consultant for Petrovietnam but also the "core" of the Group's innovation ecosystem, contributing to building highly qualified human resources, capable of proactively receiving and using the most advanced technologies in the world, promoting Petrovietnam's energy transition and sustainable development.
