The forest in Nhot village is located along Highway 37, covering an area of about 300 hectares, formed by two mountain ranges, with fresh air all year round. In 1954, during the march from Nghia Lo (Yen Bai province) to Dien Bien to participate in the Dien Bien Phu campaign, General Vo Nguyen Giap and the liberation army stopped and stationed here.
In the forest there is a flat area, Bua stream flows through, layers of dense forest trees have become a "roof" to safely protect the army, so from then on, the forest was affectionately called by the people "General Vo Nguyen Giap Forest".

Remembering the historical vestiges associated with the General's name, in 2008, the People's Committee of Son La province recognized the "General Vo Nguyen Giap Forest" area as a provincial historical relic. By 2020, Son La province assigned Phu Yen district to deploy and implement the project of restoring, embellishing and promoting the value of the historical relic of the resistance war against the French in Ban Nhot forest sustainably, associated with the development of tourism in Son La in general, Phu Yen district in particular, creating a destination for pilgrimages to the ancient battlefield, implementing the national morality of "When drinking water, remember its source".
The project of Forest Protection, Restoration, Rehabilitation and Promotion of the Historical Relics of the Resistance War Against the French in Ban Nhot Forest has been implemented by the province since 2020.

For nearly 7 decades, the forest in Nhot village has remained vast and green, as if to show the love and loyalty of the ethnic people here for General Vo Nguyen Giap and his army that year. At the temple grounds, the people of Phu Yen and Bac Yen districts planted 103 Bauhinia trees corresponding to the age of the General as a way to show respect and remembrance for the man who made great contributions to liberating and protecting national independence.
Mr. Mui Van Ly (born in 1962), former Deputy Head of the Logistics Department of the Military Command of Son La Province, currently in charge of looking after the "General's Forest", shared: "Previously, this area was a forest with historical significance. Since the construction of the temple to worship General Vo Nguyen Giap, this forest has also been a place where visitors from all over the world come to demonstrate the tradition of "When drinking water, remember its source".

The road cutting through the relic site "General Vo Nguyen Giap Forest" has now been upgraded and beautifully renovated.
Coming here, people and tourists not only relive the heroic atmosphere of the Liberation Army advancing to Dien Bien to participate in the Dien Bien Phu campaign years ago, but also immerse themselves in the sacred and fresh space of the General Vo Nguyen Giap Temple Relic Site.

“Every year, near the anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory, tourists from all over the world come here to visit the relic. Previously, to visit the relic, vehicles had to go through the old road, across a stream and a hairpin bend that blocked the view.
At that time, this road was prone to accidents and people had a hard time traveling. However, in the past 2 years, since the road was upgraded, there have been more vehicles passing through and tourists have an additional destination, the temple, to stop and rest, making people very excited," Mr. Mui Van Ly added.

The historical relics of the resistance war against the French, Ban Nhot forest and the temple of General Vo Nguyen Giap are historical and cultural relics of precious spiritual value, reminding today's generation of the contributions and sacrifices of our ancestors for national independence.
The war has long gone, but the memories and appreciation of the people here will forever remain like the green forest that once sheltered General Vo Nguyen Giap and his army that year.
