Prosecutors in South Korea announced on December 17th that they had arrested General Park An-su, Chief of Staff of the South Korean Army.
Yonhap reported on December 17 that Park An-su was arrested on a court order, accused of playing a key role in the rebellion and abusing power. When South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law for six hours starting on the night of December 3, Park was appointed as the commander of martial law and signed the decree.
Park was suspended from his position as Chief of Staff of the South Korean Army on December 12, after the Ministry of Defense announced he was deemed unfit to perform his duties while under investigation for the martial law incident.
South Korean Army Chief of Staff Park An-su testified before parliament on December 10.
According to The Korea Herald , Mr. Park has expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation and waived his right to self-defense. With this latest development, Park An-su becomes the fifth key figure arrested after President Yoon declared martial law.
To date, in addition to Park, other high-ranking South Korean officials arrested include former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, commander of the Defense Counterintelligence Command Yeo In-hyung, commander of the Special Operations Command Kwak Jong-keun, and commander of the Capital Defense Command Lee Jin-woo.
In a related development, President Yoon's defense team asserted on December 17 that the decision to declare martial law did not constitute rebellion. His lawyer, Seok Dong-hyeon, stated, "The President will present his position in court confidently and according to his beliefs."
The South Korean Constitutional Court has now begun the process of reviewing the impeachment decision against President Yoon, aiming to make a final ruling on whether the South Korean president will be removed from office or reinstated. President Yoon is currently suspended from office after the South Korean National Assembly passed the impeachment proposal.
