Hanoi garden owner grafts kumquat with 'strange tree' to sell for Tet, earning hundreds of millions of dong

(Dan Tri) - Hundreds of kumquat trees grafted with cane have been created by a Hanoi garden owner to create a unique new product, serving the needs of Tet holiday guests for many years, with revenue of about 400 million VND per season.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Duc's garden (Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi) has about 500 kumquat trees, the special thing is that these are all kumquat pots grafted with Can Thang trees, bringing high economic value. Having been involved in the bonsai growing profession for nearly 30 years, although there were times when he encountered difficulties in bringing grafted kumquat products to customers, it was his passion and perseverance in the profession that brought the most demanding customers to the kumquat garden. "Previously, I visited a friend who worked at the Forestry Agriculture Institute and happened to see a book stating that lemon, orange, tangerine, grapefruit, kumquat, and cyperus rotundus were all in the same family. That friend advised me to try grafting to see how it went, and since 1992, I started to have the first grafted products," Mr. Duc explained the idea of grafting 2 kumquat and cyperus rotundus trees. "Back then, I even brought the trees to sell at exhibitions but did not receive any attention, many people did not believe that those two types of trees could be grafted. Until recent years, the market began to have a demand for grafted trees, my products reached many people. A friend even joked that I was ahead of my time," Mr. Duc confided.
Mr. Duc's garden has many different sizes of kumquat trees. It is known that the prices sold in the garden also vary, from a few million VND to the most expensive tree of 60 million VND/tree. The outside price can be up to hundreds of millions for a beautiful kumquat tree. The kumquat trees with large roots and ancient shapes are selected by Mr. Duc from the South to Hanoi with prices from 12-15 million VND for 1 rootstock. As someone who has been grafting kumquat and can thang varieties for many years, Mr. Duc also witnessed the moment when can thang bloomed, something that few people get to see, and has captured those moments through photos. For a skilled worker like Mr. Duc, it takes about 3 years from buying the embryo, grafting the tree to creating the shape before selling it to the market. Caring for trees to flower, bear large fruits, and have green leaves requires experience, but grafting trees to make them beautiful and grow well shows the skill and eye of the grower. The quality kumquat pots in Mr. Duc's garden produce many large fruits measuring 4-5cm. The ladder also symbolizes diligence and the desire for advancement, so it is popular with customers as gifts or to keep in offices and desks. Many pots of plants have been pre-ordered by customers and Mr. Duc carefully marked the name on each pot. In addition, Mr. Duc's garden also serves customers with mini potted plants that cost only a few hundred thousand VND but have many meanings, convenient to decorate on the desk. It is known that the revenue at Mr. Duc's garden during Tet last year was about 400 million VND, this year he also hopes to reach 500 million VND or at least the same as last year.
