E-commerce business along with the explosion of supermarkets has made business activities at traditional markets difficult and deserted. To keep up with the new trend, small traders at traditional markets are gradually changing, approaching more technology platforms to attract customers.

Traditional markets adapt to the digital age Small traders at Ma market, Dinh Hung commune (Yen Dinh) use cashless payment.

At stalls in Ma market, Dinh Hung commune (Yen Dinh), traders have prepared QR codes for people to conveniently use non-cash payment methods. At stalls selling clothes and shoes, there are technological devices that support sales via social networks such as Facebook, Zalo, etc. While selling to customers, Ms. Le Thi Hue, the owner of a grocery stall, received a phone call. She took a pen and quickly wrote it down in her notebook. She shared: "Nowadays, sales are not only directly at the market. If customers are busy and cannot come to buy, they will call and I will deliver the goods to them. Nowadays, we have to diversify our sales methods, otherwise it is difficult to keep customers."

To maintain business and adapt to the digital age, Ms. Le Thi Hong, owner of a shoe stall at Tay Thanh market, Tan Son ward (Thanh Hoa city) has built an online sales channel on social networking platforms such as Zalo and Facebook. Ms. Hong said: “About 5 years ago, at the beginning of the season like this, my stall was always crowded with customers, just opening the door to do business, customers came to buy. But in recent years, customers coming to the market have decreased, sometimes only selling to 1-2 customers a day. To adapt to the new business model, every day, I often take pictures of products and update them on Zalo and Facebook for customers to refer to and choose. Regularly updating new, high-quality product images helps attract customers and build trust. I also regularly update a variety of product designs to meet the increasing needs of customers.”

Traditional markets are not only a place to earn a living but also a place to preserve culture, traditional beauty and trading activities, contributing significantly to the economic and social development of each locality. Currently, the whole province has 388 traditional markets. The main business subjects at the markets are small traders, people who produce and sell products directly. The goods traded at the markets are rich in types and diverse in designs. Realizing the role of traditional markets, in recent years, localities have increased the mobilization of resources to renovate and upgrade markets. Thanks to that, markets have been built solidly or semi-solidly with stalls that ensure space and cleanliness, creating a more modern and convenient shopping space for consumers. All markets have established management boards and management teams to supervise buying and selling activities, ensuring order, traffic safety and public security. Localities and functional sectors have organized training sessions, propaganda, and mobilized small traders to change their thinking, apply new business methods; build trust with customers by selling products with clear origin, correct listed price, beautiful and convenient, in order to better meet the needs and habits of buying and selling goods that have existed for a long time of consumers and towards meeting modern development trends.

To adapt to the trend of digital technology, traders in traditional markets have also implemented cashless payments. At any market, whether in rural or urban areas, we see that each stall has a QR Code scanning point. Instead of paying and receiving cash, now all you need is a smartphone and a few simple steps to complete the purchase. Buyers only need to use their smartphones to scan the code to pay instead of using cash as before. Currently, people can pay for goods at the market by electronic payment without having to use cash. Cashless payment through the application is also a way to ensure a safer transaction process, fast payment speed, easy and flexible authentication; at the same time, limit the theft of assets and counterfeit money.
