Accordingly, users will soon be able to talk directly to ChatGPT and listen to this artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot communicate back by voice.
In a blog post on September 25, OpenAI said that ChatGPT has just received an update that allows the chatbot to converse with users using voice and interact with images. This is OpenAI's latest effort to help the chatbot become a popular artificial intelligence assistant like Apple's Siri.
The chatbot can now tell a story in a human-like voice and can also answer questions like “What is his house like?” and “Who is his best friend?”
OpenAI's new voice feature has similarities to those of Amazon's Alexa voice assistant or Apple's Siri.
“ChatGPT’s speaking capabilities are powered by a text-to-speech model that can generate human-like sounds from just text and a few seconds of sample speech,” Open AI said. The company added that it worked with professional voice actors to create five different voices that could be used for the chatbot.
OpenAI is also rolling out a new feature that will allow the chatbot to respond to visual prompts. For example, users can take a picture of the contents of their refrigerator and ask ChatGPT to help plan a meal using the ingredients they have.
The new features will roll out over the next two weeks to subscribers of ChatGPT's Plus and Enterprise services. Plus subscriptions currently cost $20 a month, while Enterprise is currently only available to business customers.
The updates from OpenAI come amid an ongoing AI arms race in the tech sector, initially spurred by the public launch of ChatGPT late last year.
In recent weeks, tech giants have raced to roll out new updates that directly incorporate more AI-powered tools into mainstream products.
Last week, Google announced a series of updates to its ChatGPT competitor, Bard. Also last week, Amazon said it would bring a comprehensive AI-powered update to its Alexa voice assistant.
