Fans fight before Brazil - Argentina match

Brazilian fans of the two teams fought in the stands of Maracana Stadium, right before the 2026 World Cup qualifying match on the morning of November 22.

According to TyCSports , about 15 minutes before the match, in a corner of the stands, Argentine fans sang the hit song of the 2022 World Cup. Brazilian fans immediately booed in response. After that, the two groups of fans rushed into a fight, throwing objects at each other. The police had to intervene, setting up a barrier between the two sides.

Immediately after the incident, Messi led the Argentine team to the "hot" area to calm the fans. Marquinhos and the Brazilian team also did the same. However, the atmosphere was still tense. Afterwards, the Argentine team left the field and went to the locker room.

After about 20 minutes since the incident, everything was restored. Then, the Argentina team returned to the field. The match was delayed about half an hour from the original scheduled time. The extent of damage to fans on both sides is currently unknown.

Ahead of the South American classic, Argentina are in second place. They have 12 points from their first five games, one point behind Uruguay. However, Uruguay have played one more game. Meanwhile, Brazil are in sixth place, with seven points from five games.

The South American qualifying round consists of 10 teams, playing a double round-robin. The top six teams will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup finals. Meanwhile, the seventh-placed team will have to compete for a play-off spot with representatives from other continents.
