Mr. Truong Ngoc Xuan (Bac Tu Liem, Hanoi) has nearly 40 years of experience in bonsai making.
To welcome Tet 2024 - the year of the Dragon, Mr. Xuan came up with the idea and made a kumquat tree with a winding, eye-catching dragon shape. The leaves and fruits are lush and heavy like dragon scales, winding up and down following the shape of the tree.
It took Mr. Xuan more than 3 years to create the shape for this work.
The work consists of two pairs of dragons. One pair lies horizontally, in a winding shape. The other pair forms a dragon flying vertically.
The horizontal dragon is a combination of two separate kumquat pots. Each pot contains 7-8 kumquat trees, aged 2-4 years. The pair of dragon-shaped trees (standing dragons) are about 2.5m tall.
"For a long-time practitioner like me, shaping a tree is not too difficult, but the difficulty is ensuring that the tree is healthy, has lush leaves, and bears fruit that grows evenly all over the tree like dragon scales," Mr. Xuan shared.
The entire dragon-shaped kumquat tree is shaped from steel. Mr. Xuan shaped the head and large fins from thin corrugated iron.
According to Mr. Xuan, to have a beautiful kumquat tree, he must nurture the branches to be strong enough to hold the fruit. The fruit is carefully cared for in each batch to have an even color from green, to ripe, to yellow.
When Tet comes, the tree, in addition to its unique and rare dragon shape, must also have enough leaves, buds, flowers, young and old fruits.
"I take great care of every detail on my work. This work requires perseverance and endurance, and cannot be done carelessly," said Mr. Xuan. Caring for potted plants also requires more meticulousness than when planted in the ground, ensuring adequate watering and fertilization.
"Up to now, I consider the work a success. The tree is healthy, the fruit is even, big and juicy. In a little over a month, the fruit will start to turn yellow," Mr. Xuan shared.
According to Mr. Xuan, the value of these two pairs of dragons is not too high, only about 20-30 million VND/tree. The valuation depends on many factors such as: tree shape, age, leaves, flowers and fruits...
