Portugal 16-year-old winger Lamine Yamal had to leave the field due to stomach pain, during the Champions League match on the evening of October 4 between Porto and Barca.
In the 71st minute, Yamal was sent off despite no substitutions being made by Barca. The visitors then had to play nine minutes with one less player. During this time, Barca almost had a penalty. Initially, the referee thought that Joao Cancelo had handled the ball in the penalty area. But after consulting VAR, he overturned the decision.
After Yamal failed to return, coach Xavi decided to replace him with Marcos Alonso. "Yamal said he had a stomachache," the Spanish coach said after the 1-0 win at the Dragao Stadium on the evening of October 4. "We waited, but he couldn't continue."
According to Mundo Deportivo , the digestive problem is not too serious. Therefore, Yamal can return to play against Granada this weekend.
This was Yamal's first start in the Champions League. The 16-year-old talent became the youngest starter in the history of the competition, breaking the record set by Celestine Babayaro in 1994. Previously, Yamal set records for youngest player to play for Barca (15 years, nine months, 16 days), youngest player to start for Barca (16 years, 38 days) and youngest player to assist in La Liga (16 years, 45 days).
Yamal also played two games for Spain, where he became the youngest player to play and score (16 years and 57 days), breaking two records set by teammate Gavi. Yamal also broke Gareth Bale's record as the youngest scorer in a Euro qualifier.
On October 2, Barca extended Yamal's contract until 2026. The three-year contract is the maximum for a minor player. When Yamal turns 18, Barca will be ready to sign a new five-year contract. The current contract has a release clause of 1 billion euros, equivalent to 1.05 billion USD.
