100% of workers work
Up to now, of the seven sand mines handed over by Dong Thap province under a special mechanism, two have been requested by the contractor to stop exploitation. The remaining five mines are still operating normally and the sand is being brought back to serve the construction of the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway according to regulations.

Present at the sand mine in Tan My and Tan Khanh Trung communes, Lap Vo district, an area of more than 32 hectares assigned by Dong Thap province to Tan Nam Construction Joint Stock Company, Giao Thong Newspaper reporters found that the mining site was still operating normally despite the holiday.
Mr. Tran Van Toan (35 years old, living in Chau Thanh district, An Giang province) - a sand mining worker said that the sand mine is equipped with two scrapers, with 8 workers taking turns working.
"This year's National Day holiday, September 2, starts from August 31 to September 3, but all workers stay at the sand mine to work with the hope that sand will be brought back to the site to serve the continuous and smooth construction of the highway," Mr. Toan added.
Mr. Bui Van Tuong (23 years old, living in Ca Mau province) - a sand mining worker shared: "Although it is very far from Ca Mau province to Dong Thap province to work and I only go home once in a while. However, due to work requirements and the sand mine working during holidays, I asked to stay and work."
Workers working during holidays will receive double the bonus, plus meal allowance, compared to normal working days.
At the sand mine assigned by Dong Thap province to Truong Son Construction Corporation for direct exploitation under a special mechanism to serve the construction of the Western vertical expressway, Mr. Trinh Ngoc Dong, manager of the sand mine, said that the sand mine is equipped with two scrapers with 10 workers.
"During the National Day holiday on September 2 this year, the unit arranged for 100% of workers to work through the holiday. To encourage the workers' spirit at the sand mine, the contractor paid double the salary, plus a meal allowance compared to a normal working day," said Mr. Dong.
Barge running through September 2nd holiday
According to Mr. Dong, up to this point, the sand mine assigned to the contractor by Dong Thap province has exploited more than 566,000m3 of sand. On average, each day, the company transports from 2,500m3 to 2,700m3 of sand to the construction site to serve the construction of the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway.
"To ensure enough barges can rotate continuously, Truong Son Construction Corporation has arranged 39 barges of different sizes, ready to transport sand to the construction site to serve the construction of the Western Expressway package for the contractor in charge of construction," said Mr. Dong.
Mr. Dong added that with the reserve granted according to regulations, each day, the sand mining site needs three barges to meet the permitted quantity. Therefore, whether it is a weekday or a holiday, the number of barges is still enough to meet the construction needs.
Barges are waiting to transport sand to the Can Tho - Ca Mau highway construction site.
Mr. Khong Van Duoc (56 years old, living in Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province) - owner of a sand barge for Truong Son Construction Corporation said that while the sand mining site was working, the sand barge was still operating normally, despite the National Day holiday on September 2.
"On average, I make about ten trips to the highway construction site each month. I work for a key national project, so when the construction site is open, I will also work, whether it is a holiday or a weekday," Mr. Duoc shared.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vu, manager of the sand mine, Tan Nam Construction Joint Stock Company, said that since the sand mine began operating, the contractor has exploited over 553,000m3 of sand.
"On average, the company exploits 2,500m3 of sand per day. This amount is equivalent to 80,000m3 to 85,000m3 of sand per month. With this amount, the company needs 4 to 5 barges per day to transport enough sand to the construction site," said Mr. Vu.
Mr. Chau Van Hiep (37 years old, residing in Tan Chau town, An Giang province) - owner of a sand barge for Tan Nam Construction Joint Stock Company said: "Since the sand mine started to be exploited, I have been transporting sand to the highway construction site until now. Therefore, my barge is always ready to work even during the National Day holiday on September 2nd".
The Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway project connects many provinces in the Mekong Delta. In phase 1, the project has a total investment of more than VND 27,200 billion, divided into two component projects including Can Tho - Hau Giang, 36.7km long, with an investment capital of over VND 9,700 billion, and the Hau Giang - Ca Mau section, 72.8km long, with a capital of nearly VND 17,500 billion. The project started on January 1, 2023, and is expected to be completed in early 2026. The total demand for sand for the entire project is about 18.1 million m3. In 2023 alone, 9.1 million m3 is needed and in 2024, 9 million m3 is needed.
