(CLO) Dutch police arrested several pro-Palestinian protesters in central Amsterdam on Wednesday.
Crowds of protesters defied a ban on gatherings linked to earlier violence between Ajax football fans and Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Dozens of protesters, some holding Palestinian flags, chanted slogans such as "Amsterdam against genocide" and "Free Palestine".

Armed police surrounded the protesters, arrested them and put them on buses. Amsterdam police have also carried out numerous searches and arrested hundreds of protesters since emergency measures were imposed following clashes last week. The measures are expected to last until Thursday.
One protester, Max van den Berg, 32, called on the Netherlands to stop supporting Israel and shouted: “We say: Freedom for Palestine. Stop killing innocent people. Stop killing children."
According to Gaza, more than 43,000 Palestinians were killed in the Israeli offensive, and much of the Gaza Strip was destroyed. The riots involving Maccabi Tel Aviv fans began when some of them attacked a taxi and burned a Palestinian flag, before being chased and beaten by youths on motorbikes. After the incident, police escorted hundreds of Maccabi fans to their hotels for safety.
Israeli and Dutch politicians have condemned the attacks, calling them anti-Semitic and reminiscent of the persecution of Jews during World War II. However, Palestinian supporters say they were merely reacting to provocations by Maccabi fans.
Of the 62 suspects arrested, four remain in custody, including 10 Israelis. The incidents have also sparked protests in Amsterdam’s Moroccan Muslim community, where many young people have expressed sympathy for Palestinians in Gaza.
