Beware of 'fraudulent money recovery support' on cyberspace

Last week, a woman from Thanh Hoa, after being scammed for participating as a collaborator to close deals for a brand, followed the instructions of the service provider on social networks, provided personal information, transferred money for the "service fee" and was scammed again.

Regarding the form of “getting back the money that was cheated” scam that is spreading on social networks, people need to pay special attention and learn the signs to recognize and prevent it in time. Specifically, the subjects create fake accounts, without clear information about the company, address or contact information.

The scammers run ads with posts that say “support to get money back”, “commit to get back the money that was scammed”, below are comments thanking them for getting the money back using other fake accounts. After being contacted by users, the scammers will enthusiastically advise, and continuously promise and commit to getting back 100% of the lost money.
Next, the subject asked the victim to provide personal information, bank account, the amount of money that had been defrauded and successfully transferred the “service fee”. However, the staff immediately informed that the bank account was faulty and would not allow the withdrawal. When the victim questioned, the subject would block all communication.

Faced with the above situation, the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) recommends that people absolutely do not believe in the form of "support to recover money from fraud" on social networks. It is necessary to learn about the company or individual providing the service; verify their office address, phone number, and official website.

Do not trust services that require prepayment of fees. Do not provide sensitive personal information in any form. If you suspect or have become a victim of a scam in the above case, immediately report it to the authorities or investigative agencies for support and legal action.

Beware of scams selling special medicine on social networks

Recently, a victim of the above scam reported that he bought medicine to treat bone and joint diseases using traditional medicine from a person impersonating a specialist doctor of the Military Hospital. Because of trust, the victim ordered and used it, however, after using it, the victim experienced unusual symptoms.

For the above form, the common trick of scammers is to operate in groups, simultaneously creating fake social network accounts, posting advertisements about "miracle" drugs at high prices. Among them, many pages do not have a contact address, only a phone number for consultation.

Besides those who claim to be “consultants”, there will be other subjects whose job is to impersonate doctors at central hospitals to diagnose and prescribe medicine.

These drugs cost from several hundred thousand to tens of millions of dong, with different uses such as: cancer prevention drugs, drugs to reduce the effects of chemotherapy, cancer radiotherapy, drugs for people with late-stage cancer, but in fact are cheap drugs with ingredients of unknown origin.

More sophisticatedly, these groups also carry out the trick of "discounting" for the elderly, the poor, and the seriously ill, aiming to exploit the promotion-loving psychology of some consumers.

In response to the above information, the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) recommends that people absolutely do not buy and sell on social networks, especially for special medicines of unknown origin.

When people are sick, they need to go to the hospital for direct examination and purchase medicine under the advice and prescription of a doctor. Be extremely wary of drug advertisements that promise to quickly cure serious illnesses or provide miraculous results without clear evidence.

Learn about the manufacturer and the drug through reliable sources such as the websites of pharmaceutical regulatory agencies or health organizations.

In case of encountering such scammers, people should report fraudulent activities or counterfeit drugs to the authorities or consumer protection organizations. At the same time, share information about suspicious products with the community to warn and help others avoid being scammed.

Fraudulent tricks of labor export and visa-free tourism

Taking advantage of people's need to work abroad and travel to Korea, the subject created a social network account, posted information looking for people who wanted to work in Korea and travel without a visa to Jeju Island (Korea). Using sophisticated tricks, the subject appropriated money from 10 people with a total amount of more than 747 million VND.

In this form, the subject usually creates fake social media accounts, joins groups to find users who need to buy airline tickets and apply for visas to go abroad. The subject invites the victim and promises to issue visas in a very short time or guarantees a high success rate without carefully checking the documents.

Taking advantage of people's lack of understanding of the visa application process, the subject will ask for unnecessary information, or request to transfer unclear fees in advance.

After the victim transfers money, the subject will not contact any agency, organization or individual to complete the procedures but will carry out the act of appropriation.

In addition, to avoid detection of fraud, the subject also accessed the website Abay.vn, entered the victim's personal information to register to buy a plane ticket to Korea, then took a photo and sent it to the victim to create trust. Because Cuong did not pay for the ticket, the plane ticket was automatically canceled within 24 hours.

The Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) recommends that people need to check the authenticity and information of the subjects and service companies they contact. Only apply for visas through certified visa agents or services, with specific office addresses and clear contact information.

Never access strange links, actively search and access the websites of consulates, embassies or official organizations to learn about the visa application process. Do not trust services that promise to issue visas quickly or guarantee a high success rate without carefully checking the application.

In case of encountering subjects with signs of fraud, people need to report suspicious services or websites to authorities or consumer protection organizations to help prevent fraudulent behavior.

Using trademark protection tools to threaten and blackmail

Recently, technology corporation Meta has issued a warning about fraudulent behavior through the brand copyright protection tool on the social networking platform Facebook.

Specifically, a large number of Facebook users reported that the content they created and posted was taken down for copyright infringement reasons. They then received messages from large companies and corporations, asking them to access the links or pay certain fees to restore the above content, otherwise it would be permanently deleted.

Fraudsters will actively search for videos with similar content or create their own videos using artificial intelligence to flag users' copyrights. Then, the subjects will contact the victims via email or social media platforms; asking the victims to access links to provide personal information to verify ownership or pay fees to restore and continue using the accused content.

Typically, messages come from unofficial or fake email addresses, contain extra characters or unusual writing style, and often include links to unfamiliar websites with poor interfaces, broken fonts, and lots of ads.

In the face of ongoing fraud, the Information Security Department (Ministry of Information and Communications) recommends that users, especially content creators on social networking platforms, be vigilant against messages threatening extortion. When users notice that content has been removed due to copyright infringement, they should contact the support staff of the platform they are using to resolve the issue. Check the email address carefully.

Absolutely do not access strange links, do not provide personal information or transfer money to any person.

Amazon warns users to beware of fake brand messages

Amazon users say they have recently received multiple messages via email about issues related to their purchases, asking for links and information to fix the problem.

Messages sent with content such as: “Payment method has a problem, for more details please visit the link…” or “Amazon Prime account has expired,…” tend to ask users to access the attached links. After accessing, users will be asked to provide personal data, financial information such as credit card number, expiration date, ... or pay fees.

This is an extremely serious form of information appropriation fraud. With personal data stolen from users, the subjects can sell it on black market groups or use it to gain access to Amazon accounts and conduct illegal transactions.

Typically, these messages are sent from spoofed email addresses that contain strange characters or do not end with @amazon.com. Additionally, the email content contains misspellings or unusual writing style (possibly created by translation tools or artificial intelligence).

In the face of fraud, the Information Security Department (Ministry of Information and Communications) recommends that Amazon users in particular and other e-commerce platforms in general be vigilant against strange messages. Absolutely do not access links, provide personal data and banking information.

When encountering problems during the purchase and shipping process, users should directly contact the support team through the application or official phone number.
