The number of emergency cases increased in the days leading up to Tet.
Household accidents and fireworks
In addition to traffic accidents, year-end house cleaning and repair activities also lead to many unfortunate injuries. Notably, children are the group most affected by firecracker accidents, leaving behind heartbreaking consequences as Tet approaches.
From January 20-24, 2025, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital received 245 emergency cases due to traffic accidents and 169 emergency cases due to domestic accidents.
Ms. TTN (63 years old, Thai Binh) was transferred to the emergency room at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital because she fell from a ladder while picking custard apples to display on a fruit tray. The fall caused her to have a collapsed L1 vertebra. Ms. N is currently being treated at the Spinal Surgery Department.
Ms. NTH (59 years old, Hai Phong) fell when getting out of the car to buy Tet goods, leading to a broken kneecap and degeneration of the right knee. Ms. H was given a cast and is scheduled to return for a check-up after Tet.
Mr. NTM (91 years old, Hung Yen) after slipping, broke his right femur, and was treated by his family with a thigh and shin cast.
Doctors at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital continue to warn about accidents caused by firecrackers. Here, a teenager (16 years old, from Ha Nam) used homemade firecrackers and suffered serious injuries, including the loss of fingers and many other injuries.
In just the last 3 months of the year, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital received 21 cases of accidents caused by firecrackers, with more than 50% of the victims being children. This is a strong warning about the dangers of homemade firecrackers and their long-term impact on children’s health, both physically and mentally.
Fireworks accidents cause unpredictable consequences.
Safety tips for Tet holiday
Faced with this situation, doctors have issued recommendations to help people celebrate Tet safely and fully. Accordingly, everyone should absolutely not drive after drinking alcohol, be careful when working at heights and using sharp tools. Climbing ladders to pick fruit, clean or repair the house should be done carefully with safety support tools. Make sure the space is well-lit, the ladder is sturdy and there is someone to assist when necessary.
In addition, homemade fireworks always pose unpredictable dangers. People should not arbitrarily manufacture or use illegal fireworks, especially homemade fireworks. This is not only a violation of the law but also poses a risk of causing serious injury, even affecting life. People need to raise awareness, absolutely do not buy, sell or use illegal fireworks and need to guide their children to stay away from these dangerous actions to protect their own safety and the community. Parents need to absolutely prohibit children from accessing or using fireworks, and at the same time educate children to be aware of this danger.
As the front line in emergency and treatment of serious accidents, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital is always ready to support people in all situations. However, doctors emphasize that awareness of accident prevention from each person is the best way to keep yourself and your family safe.
