Need the character of Quang people through the ability to argue!

(VHQN) - There are many people who argue everywhere, argue a lot but don't argue well, and don't convince the listener - sometimes being convinced here can be understood as... not being able to argue back! However, there are also many people - usually in parliament like congressmen or in court like lawyers - who argue a lot and argue well. Because they argue a lot, they argue well. People who don't say a word all day can't be called good at arguing, and even if they do argue, it's probably hard to argue well!

Quang Nam is argumentative.

For hundreds of years, the saying “Quang Nam is argumentative…” has been circulated among the people. From the 1820s until now (that is, since the appearance of the four provincial administrative place names Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Thua Thien - the place name Binh Dinh first appeared in the year Ky Mui 1797, and the place name Thua Thien first appeared in the year Nham Ngo 1822), the saying is related to all four provinces, but it seems that only the first part “Quang - Nam - argumentative - argument” is mentioned over and over again.

This has always accompanied generations of Quang Nam people. Through the mouths of the world, it sometimes sounds like a mockery or even criticism, but most of the time, Quang Nam people feel it as a very proud compliment…

It is worth being ridiculed and even criticized by the world, because as mentioned above, many people argue everywhere, argue a lot but do not argue well or convincingly. They argue so much that they are known as "arguing incessantly", sometimes knowing that they are not absolutely right but still trying to argue vaguely, trying to win and be better.

And so of course the world will not appreciate the culture of debate, leading to not being appreciated in terms of role in the collective as well as in the community.

Entering the era of national growth, perhaps Quang Nam people should reflect together to limit themselves to the lowest level and say "no" to this shameful "arguing" situation.

However, the fact that we don’t “argue and argue” here does not mean that we see something wrong but still “keep our mouths shut and take the money” which is very strange to the Quang Nam spirit. It is even more different from the type where/when people invite us to give our opinions, we keep quiet and say nothing - even vote in favor - waiting until we get outside to start using our Quang Nam accent - or - arguing is also not similar to the Quang Nam spirit...

That also means that to meet the requirements of integration and development in the era of national growth, Quang Nam people - especially Quang Nam intellectuals - still have to take advantage of their tradition of arguing and their ability to argue well.

Critical thinking

The tradition of arguing and the ability to argue well is nothing more than critical thinking, a way of approaching a problem from many different dimensions to find the optimal solution.

It can be said that critical thinking plays an extremely important role in the new era. This is the inherent strength of Quang Nam people, who have a tradition of arguing and the ability to argue well.

Thanks to this inherent strength - argumentative and passionate about debate, Quang Nam people do not easily accept ideological subsidies or existing dogmas, or familiar but outdated thinking.

Most Quang Nam people often work hard to think deeply and at the same time know how to speak clearly and concisely to express and defend their opinions, sometimes unintentionally becoming the trigger for criticism with profound social meaning...

At the Scientific Workshop on Identifying and Promoting the Cultural Values and People of Quang Nam in the New Period, co-organized by the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee and the Regional Political Academy III (October 2024), I proposed that in the process of building school culture, "we should focus on promoting the argumentative and heroic qualities of Quang Nam people to create conditions for Quang Nam students to effectively demonstrate critical thinking/argumentative thinking in each class - highly appreciating students who ask questions/argue, and highly appreciating creative and unique assignments that differ from the answers".

It can be said that schools are where the young generation of Quang Nam practice critical thinking and good argumentation skills - this is also the highlight for Quang Nam education to strongly shift from the concept of taking teachers as the center to the concept of taking students as the center, in order to best meet the demands of the new era of development.

Arguing with myself

The story of Quang Nam-or-arguing is mainly viewed from the perspective of arguing with others, but the story of Quang Nam-or-arguing should also focus more on approaching it from the perspective of others arguing with you.

Reality shows that there are many cases where "Quang Nam - people - like - arguing" with others is fine, but whenever someone "Quang Nam - people - like - arguing" with them, they immediately feel hot and uncomfortable, even when they clearly see that the other person is right and they are increasingly losing the argument.

If only in this situation the argumentative Quang Nam person did not lose the ability to argue with himself, bravely accept that he was wrong and promptly withdraw his opinion... It is necessary to see that the ability to argue with himself is truly a wonderful argumentative Quang Nam ability that not every Quang Nam person can easily acquire.

It should be added that the ability to argue with oneself, to be dissatisfied and satisfied with one's own achievements is also a decisive driving force for Quang Nam intellectuals to constantly innovate and create in science and technology as well as in literature and art.
