According to Cambodia's ThmeyThmey online newspaper on May 25, President of the Cambodian Senate, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, denied the information that he had ordered the start of the Phu Nam canal project on June 12.
Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen affirmed that the decision to start this project is the prerogative of Prime Minister Hun Manet.
In a message on social media, Mr. Hun Sen called on the government to start the project as soon as possible, but did not give any specific time.
Mr. Hun Sen affirmed that the Phu Nam canal project does not cause any environmental and social concerns, so Cambodia needs to carry out this project.
The 180-km Funan Canal project with a total investment of up to 1.7 billion USD is being implemented by a Chinese company. According to the initial plan of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Cambodia, the project is expected to start construction on December 29, 2024.
It is expected that after completion, Cambodia will gain significant economic benefits from transportation activities, estimated at 88-570 million USD per year.
