On the afternoon of June 29, Cau Giay District Police (Hanoi) said they were verifying a subject who impersonated a police agency and called people to instruct them on how to install fake public service software and then appropriated their property.
On June 11, Ms. T. (born in 1983, living in Cau Giay) received a call from a person claiming to be a police officer of Trung Hoa ward, Cau Giay district, informing her that her identification account was faulty.
The subject instructed Ms. T. to install fake public service software. After installing, she discovered that more than 1.2 billion VND had been lost from her bank account. Realizing that she had been scammed, Ms. T. went to the police to report the incident.
From the above incident, Hanoi City Police advise people to be vigilant and absolutely not install software or applications at the request of strangers.
In addition, Hanoi City Police also clearly stated the method of the subject impersonating a police officer to call people to inform them that their citizen identification card is faulty or that they need to update their resident data and identification code, then ask them to come to the police station to work. They will pressure them with the excuse of needing to complete the documents urgently to ask people to download fake software from the provided link.
When installing this fake software, the subjects will take control of the phone, thereby appropriating money in the bank account and payment applications saved on the victim's phone.
