Singer Vo Phuong Thuy: Sweet voice of folk songs

Singer Vo Phuong Thuy was born and raised in the mountainous district of Tan Ky, in a family where no one was active in the arts. Her love for music was her innate instinct, not something she was guided or led to do. With all her passion and determination, she studied and practiced diligently, winning a number of achievements such as the Sao Mai Nghe An Encouragement Prize 2022, the runner-up of the Song Thuong Singing Contest 2021... And in the "Duet Dinh Ca 2023" contest, with the companionship of Hoang Nhu Quynh, she achieved the highest title at this music playground loved by many audiences.

At the recent "Duet Dinh 2023" competition, Vo Phuong Thuy and her partner Hoang Nhu Quynh had excellent performances, conquering the audience and famous judges Cam Ly, Hien Thuc, Minh Vy, Hoang Nhat Nam to win the championship.

For Phuong Thuy, the title of Tuyet Dinh Song Ca Champion is like a dream, but a worthy dream for the long and arduous journey of the female singer from Nghe An.

Phuong Thuy's mother said that since she was 2 years old, she could barely speak, but little Thuy often held her notebook and walked around the yard, humming. When she was old enough to go to school, Thuy always participated in artistic activities at school. The applause and compliments from teachers and friends... were the joy and motivation for that pretty girl to be determined to go far, to take the entrance exam to the Vietnam National Academy of Music, to pursue a professional artistic career.

At the largest music training center in the country, Phuong Thuy was instructed and trained in vocal techniques in a systematic and standardized manner. Although studying classical music, the girl from Nghe An was still determined to practice and pursue folk music.

“Nghe An is a land rich in folk music traditions. I have listened to the songs and lullabies of my mothers since I was a child. The “quality” of folk music has seeped into my blood. Later, when I grew up and learned more, I found this genre of music very good. I loved it even more. I felt that I could learn and cultivate it to develop and pursue my passion, bringing the singing of my homeland closer to the audience,” Phuong Thuy shared.

Interestingly, Phuong Thuy chose to develop folk music, but the teacher who directly guided her at the National Academy of Music was chamber singer Phuc Tiep. Talking about this, Phuong Thuy said: “I think that is something new and different in my singing style. The teacher trained me in chamber music, imparted solid techniques, and helped me a lot in singing folk songs. What I learned from him, I applied to singing folk songs to make my singing more complete”. Phuong Thuy also added that singer Phuc Tiep is a very emotional person, devoted to his students. It was his dedication that helped her understand life more deeply and put those experiences into music, making her emotions more abundant and profound.

Pursuing folk music, Phuong Thuy has many advantages, but also many pressures. Especially when this music genre has many famous singers from Nghe An such as Pham Phuong Thao, Bui Le Man, To Nga, Thanh Tai, Dang Thuat, Dinh Thanh Le...

Talking about the success of her predecessors, Phuong Thuy confided that she did not deny that there was pressure, but the motivation was still greater. “Seeing many successful seniors, loved by the audience, I have more motivation to try harder every day. I think each person has a different version and if we try to be better than our own version, we will definitely have an audience, success and a place,” Phuong Thuy expressed.

Currently, Phuong Thuy is a second-year music student. Along with studying, she still works hard to perform to hone her craft, gain stage experience, and also participates in music competitions to gain performance experience and assert herself.

Hoang Nhu Quynh was also born in 1998, from the same hometown of Tan Ky and is studying at the Vietnam National Academy of Music; especially sharing the same passion for folk and lyrical music as Vo Phuong Thuy. The two have been close friends for 8 years. The harmony from life to music has helped the two 9x female singers support each other, shine together, and become the most excellent couple of Tuyet Dinh Song Ca 2023.

Talking about her friend Hoang Nhu Quynh, Phuong Thuy said: “Normally, we rarely compliment each other because we understand each other too well, understand each other's feelings too well, and have been close friends for 8 years. But I can say that Quynh is a real talent. She has a true folk voice and is always full of energy, cheerful, sociable, always determined, strong-willed, and strives hard for the goals she sets.”

Phuong Thuy shared that after the program "Duet Dinh 2023", she and Hoang Nhu Quynh will definitely still have development directions together. Along with that, she revealed: "I think Quynh and I still have a lot of potential. Therefore, after the competition, we will continue to learn and exploit to always find new things for ourselves to continue to develop. But the common goal is still how to let everyone know and love my voice, so that I can contribute more to the audience and to music".
