Whooping cough causes many dangerous complications for children
According to the assessment of the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC), all whooping cough cases recorded since the beginning of the year have been sporadic, with no outbreaks. It is forecasted that in the coming time, there will continue to be sporadic cases, mainly in young children who are not yet old enough to be vaccinated (under 2 months old) or have not been fully vaccinated, accounting for 72% of cases.
Whooping cough is a contagious disease caused by bacteria, easily transmitted through the respiratory tract, children and adults can be infected if not fully vaccinated on schedule.
Most severe cases occur in children under 2 years of age, especially under 12 months of age. Adults with whooping cough often have nonspecific cough symptoms that are mistaken for normal coughs and become the main source of infection for young children in the home.
Hanoi ensures there is enough whooping cough vaccine to vaccinate young children. Families need to vaccinate their children at 2 months of age.
Because whooping cough is a disease with no lifelong immunity, booster shots need to be given at certain times, specifically: when children are 4-7 years old, 9-15 years old; women preparing for and are pregnant. Adults need to get booster shots of the whooping cough vaccine every 10 years so that the body continues to form protective antibodies against the disease.
Also last week, the city recorded 72 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (down 4 cases compared to the previous week). Patients were recorded in 24 districts, of which the districts with many cases include: Ha Dong, Nam Tu Liem, Dong Da, Me Linh. From the beginning of 2024 to now, there have been 1,393 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, more than double the same period in 2023.
Last week, Hanoi recorded 21 cases of dengue fever (2 cases less than the previous week). Accumulated from the beginning of 2024 to now, Hanoi has recorded 711 cases of dengue fever (more than 2 times higher than the same period in 2023). However, the number of dengue fever cases mainly concentrated in January 2024, which is the "tail" of the 2023 epidemic.
This week, a new dengue fever outbreak was also recorded in Pho Hue Ward, Hai Ba Trung District. Since the beginning of the year, the city has recorded 8 outbreaks, with 2 outbreaks currently active in Dong Thap Commune (Dan Phuong District) and Pho Hue Ward (Hai Ba Trung District).
