AFP news agency reported on June 25 that authorities in the US are investigating a tragic accident in which an airport worker died after being sucked into a passenger plane engine.

The Delta Airlines (US) flight previously landed at San Antonio International Airport (Texas) on the evening of June 23 (local time) after departing from Los Angeles (California).

The plane was taxiing to a stop with one engine running when an employee was sucked into the engine, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The NTSB is continuing to gather information related to the incident.

The unidentified employee worked for Unifi Aviation, a company contracted by Delta Airlines to handle ground crew operations.

Delta Airlines said in a statement that the company is "deeply saddened" by the incident and "is cooperating with authorities as they begin their investigation," KENS5 reported.

Unifi Aviation said the incident was a "tragic accident." "Our initial investigation indicates this incident was unrelated to Unifi's operating procedures, safety, and policies," the company said.

On June 21, Piedmont Airlines (USA) was fined $15,625 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) related to the death of a ground staff member last year in a similar incident.

“Proper training and enforcement of safety procedures could have prevented this tragedy,” an OSHA official said.
