9-year-old girl with stomachache and vomiting hospitalized, diagnosed with rare ovarian torsion

Taking the patient's medical history, the family said that after the child was in pain, they gave him medicine. However, the symptoms did not improve but instead became more and more severe. Upon admission to the Emergency Department of Xuyen A General Hospital, Vinh Long, the doctors quickly and thoroughly examined him.

On March 28, specialist doctor Tran Van Hung, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said that through clinical and paraclinical examination, doctors discovered a twisted left ovarian tumor, measuring 52x43 mm, causing a lot of pain for the patient.

Accordingly, the doctors assessed that this was a special case because the patient was very young but had a large tumor. To ensure the safety and preservation of the patient's reproductive function, the medical team held a professional consultation to assess the overall situation. The patient's family was also carefully consulted to agree on the surgical plan.

The patient underwent laparoscopic surgery. During the surgery, the doctor observed that the left ovary, measuring about 50x60 mm, was twisted twice and had black-purple necrosis, so the entire left ovary was removed. The surgery was successful after 1 hour. The tumor was sent for pathology and the results were benign. After the surgery, the patient was monitored at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Currently, the patient's health is stable and he has been discharged from the hospital.

According to Dr. Hung, ovarian torsion usually occurs in the 20-30 age group and is very rare in children. The incidence of the disease is estimated at 2.6 cases per 100,000 girls. It is worth noting that the symptoms of the disease are often silent and easily confused with other diseases. Therefore, early detection becomes difficult. When children have signs of unusual abdominal pain, they need to go to a reputable medical facility for timely examination.
