On November 5 (Vietnam time), as soon as the United States entered election day, voters in the town of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire state went to the polling places to exercise their rights and obligations.

According to The Guardian , in the state of New Hampshire, which traditionally opens US presidential elections, 6 voters went to the polls, evenly divided between former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic representative.

Since the 1960s, voters in Dixville Notch, a town near the Canadian border, have traditionally gathered just after midnight on the first Monday in November, when the US election takes place, to cast their ballots.

The counting and announcement of votes took place immediately after that. Hours later, other states across the country opened their polls.

Both Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris used the final moments before entering the decisive day in the battle for control of the White House and Congress to call on voters to vote for them, focusing on swing states, also known as battlegrounds.

Currently, the two candidates are competing in 7 swing states, with 3 states in the "Great Lakes" region where Mr. Trump made history in 2016 including Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and 4 battlegrounds in the "Sun Belt" including Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina.

If she wins, Ms. Harris will make history, becoming the first woman, the first Asian American and the first woman of color to win the US presidency.

Meanwhile, if Mr. Trump is re-elected, this victory will also be historic: he is the second US president after Mr. Grover Cleveland to serve non-consecutive terms, the only president to have been impeached twice and convicted of 34 crimes at the end of his first term.

The biggest path to 270 electoral votes

A person who wins the US presidential election needs to get at least 270 electoral votes. Each US state has a certain number of electoral votes, corresponding to the size of that state's population. In total, the US has 538 electors.

Americans have become accustomed to presidential elections in which the race is tight, with only tens of thousands of votes remaining in the 2000, 2016, and 2020 elections.

If the polls are correct, this year’s race will fit that same pattern. Or to put it simply, on Election Night (November 5, US time), keep a close eye on the seven battleground states.

In 2020, Arizona and Georgia flipped to the Republicans after years of failure. Meanwhile, then-Democratic President Joe Biden won Nevada and swept the “blue wall” states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, the only battleground state this year that Trump won four years ago is North Carolina. However, it is predicted that it will again witness a close race.

According to CNN , there are several potential paths for Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump to reach 270 electoral votes.

For Vice President Harris, if she replicates Mr. Biden’s “blue wall” strategy, she will almost certainly be the Oval Office’s mistress. This is taking into account the expectation that she will win one electoral vote in Nebraska and lose another in Maine, two states that allocate electoral votes on a “district” basis rather than a “winner-take-all” basis.

If the “blue wall” cracks and Pennsylvania (19 electoral votes) flips to Trump, the Democratic nominee’s path becomes more complicated. The vice president would need to make up for that deficit by winning Georgia and North Carolina, both of which have 16 electoral votes. If Harris can only win one of the two, Nevada and Arizona could be the deciding factors.

For former President Trump, the electoral map is heavily tilted toward Pennsylvania. If he wins there while keeping North Carolina, he only needs Georgia to turn around to reach 270 votes.

If he wins without Pennsylvania, the Republican would have to breach the “blue wall” somewhere else. In that scenario, he would have to win Michigan or Wisconsin and add a strong showing in the “Sun Belt,” from Georgia on the East Coast to Arizona and Nevada in the West.
