Below are suggestions from travel experts about the most suitable activities and experiences when visiting Canada in winter, according to Travel and Leisure .
Skiing and winter activities
While Canada's "low season" falls in winter, this is prime time if you want to soak up knee-deep snow in the Alberta Rockies, British Columbia or Quebec.
“January and March are the optimal months to experience deep snow and sunshine on British Columbia’s Powder Highway,” says Matt Mosteller, senior vice president of Resorts of the Canadian Rockies. “Those are my favorite months to get snowed in.”
Visitors can stay in the basin of Fernie Alpine Resort, with the rocky slopes of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort or the highest vertical terrain in North America at Revelstoke Mountain Resort.
Aurora watching
The mesmerizing aurora borealis is best seen on winter nights. While it can sometimes be seen across Canada, the further north you go, the better your chances of seeing the aurora.
In the far north, the fascinating phenomenon of the midnight sun will decorate the sky during the summer months, while on the contrary - the polar night will dominate the winter when the sun barely rises above the horizon.
Therefore, the ideal months to view the aurora tend to range from late fall to late winter.

“There’s a lot more activity and it stays dark for longer periods of time in the north,” says David Daley of Wapusk Adventures. “As long as the skies are clear and dark enough, the aurora shows up 300 nights a year in Churchill – the polar bear viewing capital of the world. We have a great aurora experience from mid-August to mid-September, when the nights return.”
Hiking
While skiing and viewing the Northern Lights are best enjoyed in Canada’s winter, hiking is a great option in the summer. Canada completed the world’s longest network of multi-use and recreational trails in 2017.
The 15,000-mile Trans Canada Trail is an impressive coast-to-coast route, most of which is best experienced in the summer.
July and August are the best months across the country because they are snow-free and warmer, while spring (April to June) is likely to be the wettest and most buggy.
