The outdoor temperature dropped below zero, and ice appeared on the tops of Phia Oac mountain (Cao Bang) and Mau Son mountain (Lang Son), more than 1,000 m above sea level, on the afternoon of January 22.

Mr. Be Quoc Vinh, Director of Phia Oac - Phin Den National Park, Nguyen Binh District, Cao Bang Province, said the ice formed at 2 p.m., from an altitude of about 1,600 m to the top of the mountain at 1,931 m. The outside temperature dropped to minus 5 degrees Celsius.

All the trees and objects that were exposed to water were covered in a white layer of ice. "The wind is very strong now, many ice blocks on the trees are starting to fall off," said Mr. Vinh.

Phia Oac Peak is the highest point in Phia Oac - Phia Den National Park (also called Phja Oac - Phja Den), sometimes ice appears when the North is extremely cold, with an average daily temperature of 13 degrees Celsius or lower.

At 4:50 p.m., frost also began to appear at the top of Mau Son Mountain in Cao Loc and Loc Binh districts, Lang Son province. Thin layers of ice covered tree branches and fences from an altitude of 1,000 m up to the mountain peak of 1,520 m.

In addition to Phia Oac and Mau Son, it is likely that ice may appear on some mountain peaks over 1,500 m above sea level tonight, due to the strengthening of cold air and the decreasing temperature in the North.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said the cold spell will last until January 25, with temperatures in the Northern Delta at 7-10 degrees Celsius and in mountainous areas below 0 degrees Celsius.

This is the second severe cold spell in the winter of 2023-2024. The first spell on December 17-27, 2023, Mau Son dropped to minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the past 11 years.
