On the occasion of the 69th anniversary of Vietnam Doctors' Day, on the morning of February 25, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health and the Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine jointly organized a seminar on the program "Lighting up the dreams of young people in the medical profession". At the seminar, the issue of choosing a job at a health station or hospital after graduation was also raised for medical students.
Young doctor ready to work at commune and ward health stations
Sharing about the young doctors who have returned to work at local medical facilities and health stations, Dr. Ha Hieu Trung - Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health Youth Union said that the 18-month pilot program of practice at the hospital attached to the health station for newly graduated young doctors organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health is one of the outstanding programs of the health sector in the past year.
In particular, for the program of bringing young doctors to Thanh An Island Commune Health Station (Can Gio District), each time there will be 2 young doctors working at the island commune health station to work closely with and improve the quality of life for the island commune people.
"The time spent with the islanders is only a few months. This is not only an opportunity for young doctors to change their working space and relieve pressure in the city, but also a place to challenge themselves in other aspects and improve their practical professional experience," said Dr. Trung.
At the seminar, many students wanted to learn more about the internship program at the health station because they were afraid that they would encounter many difficulties in the future. According to Dr. Trung, young doctors going to the grassroots health unit will be a way for them to get closer to the people, understand them and gain more in-depth experience.
The Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health Youth Union said that many young doctors, after completing their internship and receiving professional certificates, have chosen to stay at local medical facilities to work and stay long-term. The dedication and enthusiasm of young people in the medical sector in recent years, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, has shown that the city's young medical staff are not only intelligent but also enthusiastic about overcoming difficulties.
This is demonstrated by the fact that young doctors choose to stay at grassroots medical facilities close to the people, specialist doctors accept to be transferred to local medical facilities, young doctors accept to go to medical facilities with difficulties and shortages to continue to promote their youth...
Bringing young doctors to island communes, people love and care for them
Since the implementation of the young doctor internship program at the health station, in just a short time, the image of young doctors has become very familiar to the people of Thanh An island commune.
Doctor Tran Cong Hung (working at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Traditional Medicine) is one of the young doctors participating in a temporary rotational volunteer program in Thanh An island commune in June 2023.
After the business trip, Dr. Hung realized that the program was meaningful not only for the islanders but also for himself.
"As a hospital secretary with the spirit of youth, and also a young doctor who wants to contribute my youth to the people, I signed up for the program. However, I couldn't help but worry about whether my ability was enough to meet the requirements; the unfamiliar workplace and life...", said Dr. Hung.
According to Dr. Hung, the first impression when the doctor arrived at the island commune’s medical station was the difficulty of traveling from the mainland to the island commune and vice versa. The distance required changing many means of transportation, making it very difficult for people to regularly access the city’s final hospitals.
While working, Dr. Hung said that the island commune’s health station is very different from the health stations in the city center. Normally, in the city, when local people have a health problem, they often choose to go to hospitals or clinics. However, on the island commune, no matter what the disease is, most people go to the health station. Therefore, the medical staff at the health station as well as young doctors who do not have enough experience face many difficulties.
"The people in Thanh An island commune are very nice and welcoming, especially the people at the boarding house on the island. The landlady takes care of the young doctors' meals and sleep. In addition, the medical staff at the station welcomed us very warmly so that the doctors would not feel overwhelmed when working in a strange environment. That reminds us that we must work hard, be dedicated and aim to bring the best health care to the people of the island commune," said Dr. Hung.
