It turns out an apple a day not only keeps the doctor away, but it can also help banish bad breath, according to the New York Post.

Dr. Megan Rossi, founder of The Gut Health Doctor and The Gut Health Clinic, and a researcher at King's College London (UK), recently took to Instagram to reveal that eating apples is much more effective than chewing mint gum to get rid of the smell of garlic in the mouth.

What makes people shy away from eating garlic is that it causes "strong garlic breath that can last almost all day."

Dr Rossi urges people not to avoid garlic, given its myriad health benefits. She explains that garlic’s main ingredient, allicin, has been scientifically proven to boost the immune system and help fight viruses.

However, what makes people hesitate to consume garlic is that it causes "strong garlic breath that can last almost all day". But now you no longer have to worry when you want to eat garlic to reap the health benefits.

As garlic goes through the digestive process, its byproducts are absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to the lungs, she explains. This causes a persistent garlic breath odor that chewing gum cannot eliminate.

Dr. Rossi suggests eating apples as a really effective way to get rid of garlic odor.

Eating apples is an effective way to remove the bad smell of garlic.

Phytonutrients (including quercetin) in apples have been shown in studies to interact with the sulfur compounds in garlic, eliminating that distinctive odor, Dr. Rossi claims, according to the New York Post.

She also added that there are four other plants that can help remove the smell of garlic: mint, celery, spinach and lettuce.

Rossi's followers were amazed by the healthy tip, with one saying: "This is so cool to know! Thanks for sharing, doctor!"

“This is so cool!” said another fan, while another found the trick “super cool.”

Meanwhile, the doctor also shared another tip for maximizing the health benefits of garlic. She recommends chopping the garlic and letting it sit for 10 minutes before cooking to release more allicin, according to the New York Post.
