Kien Giang While fishing, a 55-year-old man opened his mouth and suddenly a perch jumped into his mouth and went down his throat, causing injury.

The man tried to get the fish out but failed, and pushed it deeper. The tilapia has fins, dorsal fins, scales, and tails that are all sharp spines, which pierced the esophagus on the way in, causing injury and bleeding in the patient's throat.

The patient was taken to the Giong Rieng District Medical Center for emergency care 5 days ago, with severe bleeding from the throat and vomiting.

On June 21, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Quy, Head of the ENT Department, Giong Rieng District Medical Center, said that when receiving the patient, the doctor examined the condition of the fish (dead) in the patient's throat, the extent of the damage, and then performed an endoscopy to remove the foreign object to ensure safety and not cause further damage.

The fish was successfully removed, but the patient's throat was severely injured. The doctor gave him IV fluids, painkillers, and hemostatic drugs. After a few days, the injury gradually healed, the patient could swallow soft foods, and avoided hot foods, and was discharged from the hospital.

The doctor assessed this as a very rare case. Most cases of people going to the emergency room due to fish getting stuck in their throats are caused by biting a fish in their mouth while trying to catch another one. This patient accidentally opened his mouth while trying to catch a fish and it suddenly jumped into his mouth.

"I have been farming and fishing since I was a child, but I have never encountered anything like this," the patient also shared.
