Apple puts faith in DeepSeek for iPhone?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên04/02/2025

Apple’s interest in DeepSeek stems from its ability to perform similarly to ChatGPT without the need for high-end hardware, something that many AI companies in China struggle with. While DeepSeek may have used ChatGPT’s content to train its early versions, their new approach allows for more tasks to be performed at a lower cost, making high-quality AI solutions affordable for users.

DeepSeek integration will help Apple bring Apple Intelligence to Chinese users

As the AI industry focuses on hardware power, DeepSeek’s emergence has shifted attention to software optimization ideas. More importantly, this has attracted Apple as the company can leverage some of DeepSeek’s ideas for its AI models, especially in iOS 19 and future updates.

That said, Apple may not integrate DeepSeek into the iPhone like it did with ChatGPT and other chatbot services. Instead, it’s a necessary step for Apple in China, where iPhone sales are slowing. Apple Intelligence isn’t exactly cutting edge right now, especially compared to ChatGPT’s capabilities and the features Google brings to Android devices. Apple Intelligence is still a work in progress and may frustrate users in the early years.

DeepSeek Makes iPhone More Attractive to Chinese

The big problem with Apple Intelligence is that it’s not available in China yet. To operate in that market, Apple would need to partner with another AI provider, replacing ChatGPT with a local solution. Baidu is one of the names mentioned, but DeepSeek could be a better option for Apple. The company could sign a partnership to integrate the DeepSeek chatbot into Apple Intelligence, incorporating strict privacy protections for users. Chinese users are still stuck with the local AI option because US-based AI models aren’t available there.

This speculation is entirely reasonable, especially considering the popularity and performance of DeepSeek. Apple has used ChatGPT for Apple Intelligence, and they could do the same with DeepSeek in China. In fact, a Weibo user posted that Apple is considering DeepSeek for integration into iOS 19, not only for the Chinese market but also for the US and Europe after addressing safety and security issues.

While it’s unclear whether this information is accurate, using DeepSeek for the Chinese version of Apple Intelligence makes sense. Apple may not bring DeepSeek to international markets right away, but they have confirmed that they will add other chatbots to Apple Intelligence after ChatGPT.
