Apple begins compensating up to $349 for iPhone 7/7 Plus users

This is the result of a class action lawsuit in the US that accused iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models of having a faulty audio chip that caused electrical contact to be lost with the motherboard due to the case “bending” during normal use. Although Apple did not admit any wrongdoing, they agreed to pay $35 million to compensate users.

Compensation that iPhone 7/7 Plus users receive up to 349 USD

According to Apple, the compensation for each user ranges from $200 to $349, depending on whether they reported the problem to the company or paid for a repair or replacement of the device. Many users received around $200, while a few received payments of up to $349.

Not every iPhone 7/7 Plus owner will receive compensation

The class action lawsuit covers any US resident who owned an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus between September 16, 2016 and January 3, 2023, as long as they reported audio issues to Apple or paid to have the device repaired. The deadline to file a claim expired last year.

Audio issues users are experiencing include: the speakerphone button being grayed out during calls, the microphone not working so others can't hear them, and no sound when playing videos or taking voice notes after updating to iOS 11.3.

In addition to this lawsuit, Apple is also currently facing another class action lawsuit over the recording of users' conversations with Siri without their knowledge, which resulted in a $95 million settlement. Such class action lawsuits are not uncommon for Apple, which frequently faces legal challenges related to the design and operation of its products.
