Currently, more than 20 iPad models are still receiving updates thanks to iPadOS 18. However, it is possible that some iPad models will no longer receive iPadOS 19 updates later this year.
The latest report suggests that some iPad models launched in 2018 will still receive updates, at least to iPadOS 19, to complete seven years of support. However, a newer iPad model may no longer be supported due to processing power limitations.
Only one iPad model cannot be updated to iPadOS 19
While we can’t confirm this until Apple announces iPadOS 19 at WWDC 2025 in June, rumors suggest that at least one iPad model compatible with iPadOS 18 will stop receiving updates this year. If the list of devices compatible with iPadOS 19 is accurate, the iPad (7th generation) with the A10 Fusion chip will no longer receive the update.
This is a change from last year when iPadOS 18 stopped supporting three iPad models, including the iPad (6th generation), iPad Pro 10.5-inch, and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation).
If the leaks are accurate, the list of iPad models compatible with iPadOS 19 will include: iPad mini (5th, 6th, and 7th generations), iPad (8th, 9th, and 10th generations), iPad Air (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generations), 11-inch iPad Pro (all generations), and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generations).
This list is in contrast to the information about iPhones, where all current iPhone models compatible with iOS 18 will be able to update to iOS 19. This can be explained by the fact that iOS 18 has stopped supporting iPhone models using chips older than the A12 Bionic. Among iPad models, the iPad (7th generation) is the only one that uses a chip older than the A12 Bionic and will receive software updates for 6 years if the prediction is correct.
Additionally, Apple is expected to launch more iPad models in 2025 that will also be compatible with iPadOS 19 and continue to receive support for years to come.
