According to MacRumors , Apple has just upgraded the security feature for its iCloud cloud storage service with 'Advanced Data Protection', using end-to-end encryption to protect user data at the highest level.
Apple enhances security for user data on iCloud
With this new feature, most sensitive data on iCloud such as backups, photos, notes, etc. can only be decrypted on the user's trusted Apple devices. This means that even Apple cannot access this data, ensuring absolute safety for users, even in the event of a data breach in the cloud.
Previously, iCloud encrypted 14 types of sensitive data by default. Now, with Advanced Data Protection, that number increases to 23, including:
- Device and Message Backup
- iCloud Drive
- Note
- Image
- Reminder
- Voice notes
- Safari Bookmarks
- Siri Shortcuts
- Wallet Card
However, iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendars will not be end-to-end encrypted due to compatibility requirements with global email, contacts, and calendar systems.
To enable Advanced Data Protection, users need to:
- Update all Apple devices to the latest software version (iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, and macOS 13.2 or later).
- Set up Account Recovery by adding a Recovery Contact or creating a Recovery Key.
- Turn on Advanced Data Protection in iCloud settings.
Note that when this feature is enabled, users will not be able to access data via the iCloud.com website by default.
Advanced Data Protection is an important step forward for Apple in protecting privacy and data, giving users more peace of mind when storing important information on iCloud.
