5 things to note when designing interiors for multi-generational homes

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí10/03/2025

(Dan Tri) - Interior design for a multi-generational family requires the homeowner and architect to carefully consider, listen to and harmonize the needs and desires of each member.

In modern society, multi-generational families living together are becoming more and more popular, especially in big cities. However, designing a living space that meets the needs of many generations with different lifestyles and interests is a big challenge.

Listen and understand the needs of each member

The most important thing in designing a multi-generational home is to listen to each member’s opinions. The homeowner or design firm should not take one person’s opinion to represent all, because everyone has their own needs and desires.

When designing a house, we need to get everyone's opinion about their needs, preferences, and habits. You can't take one person's opinion for another. Each person in the family needs to speak up about their wishes about the common living space.

After gathering information, the final decision maker will unify the views and come up with a design plan for the house.

Notes on Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an important factor, especially when there are elderly people in the family. For multi-generational homes, interior design should only be done after Feng Shui decisions have been made. The interior designer should respect the opinion of a Feng Shui expert and develop the plan based on that.

Old people downstairs, young people upstairs

For multi-generational families, the living space must ensure the principle that the elderly live on the ground floor and the young live on the upper floors. The elderly should be given priority on the lower floors to avoid having to climb stairs. If possible, the house should have an elevator so that they can easily move to the upper floors, especially the worship room area, which is usually located on the highest floor.

Young people should stay on the upper floors to avoid disturbing the elderly.

Common space needs to create cohesion

Common spaces should be designed to encourage interaction between family members. Interior design should create open, airy spaces and limit private paths so that people can easily observe and talk to each other.

The common space needs to be suitable and harmonious in terms of aesthetic taste of all generations in the family. Elderly people such as grandparents, parents and young members such as children all feel comfortable and at ease when participating in this common living area.

Design based on family culture

Each family has its own culture and living habits, so interior design needs to be based on these distinct characteristics.

For example, you can arrange the ground floor to have the bedroom of the oldest person such as grandparents, near the toilet and have a maid's room for convenient care. The son and grandchildren's rooms on the second floor are convenient for taking care of grandparents downstairs but still have a certain level of privacy.

The recreation room and gym are on the top floor to avoid noise. The dining area is located in the center of the ground floor with a green space or small garden for people to connect and chat.
