According to Fortune Well, research shows that men often tend to avoid or delay necessary medical care, even when symptoms have a major impact on their lives or become chronic.
An online survey conducted by the Cleveland Clinic of 1,174 men aged 18 and older found that 72% of men would rather do household chores like cleaning the toilet or mowing the lawn than go to the doctor.
Dr. Antonio Fernandez, medical director of the cardiac intensive care unit and preventive heart disease unit at Hartford Hospital, always reminds patients that timing is of the essence.
“With some heart conditions, symptoms can progress over time,” Fernandez says. “Obviously, if you have a heart problem, it’s better to catch it early than to wait too long and have a more serious problem.”
4 warning symptoms in men
Unexplained fatigue
It's no surprise that many men experience periods of fatigue. But if the feeling of exhaustion becomes severe and persistent, seek medical attention, as this symptom has been linked to heart disease.
One study found that men with moderate to high levels of fatigue had a 2.7 times higher risk of heart attack within 5 years and a 2.25 times higher risk within 10 years.
Additionally, fatigue is linked to other serious conditions in men, particularly depression, which is also strongly linked to the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Chest discomfort
A feeling of tightness and pressure in the chest is a serious sign that requires immediate medical attention, as it is the most common symptom of a heart attack in men. "Don't ignore it and don't go to bed with chest pain, because you may not wake up," warns Dr. Steven Lamm, director of the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Men's Health at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City.
Swelling in lower limbs
Swelling in the legs, feet, and hands can be an early sign of heart failure. This happens when the heart isn't pumping blood well enough, causing blood to build up in the tissues. It can also be a sign of other conditions, but if it persists, see your doctor.
Reduced exercise capacity
If you notice that exercising becomes more difficult than usual, such as tiring more easily when climbing stairs or even light exercise leaves you exhausted, see your doctor. Tracking these changes with your smartwatch can also help detect problems earlier.
Don't avoid medical examination.
Reasons for avoiding medical care may include fear, denial, mistrust of the medical system, downplaying symptoms, or misconceptions about masculinity. The consequences of avoiding medical care become more dangerous, even life-threatening, as men age.
“Don't ignore your health, and don't delay health care,” Dr. Lamm recommends.
Dr. Lamm also emphasized that men should understand their baseline numbers, including blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, to detect current or potential future cardiovascular problems.
