Regarding the mechanism of damage to bones and joints caused by sitting too much, experts from Medlatec Hospital explained that one of the harmful effects of sitting too much is the higher risk of diseases related to bones and joints. These include spinal degeneration, herniated discs, and spinal spurs. The main reason is that when sitting for a long time, the spine, neck, and back will be under great pressure from body weight. This can easily cause symptoms such as back pain, back pain, cramps, shoulder and neck muscle fatigue, etc.
In addition, the vertebral areas when under a lot of pressure will also cause the disc to swell. Prolonged condition causes the nerve roots to become fibrotic or compressed and cause sciatica. The pain often radiates from one side, from the buttocks down the leg.
"For young children, sitting a lot and in the wrong posture for a long time can cause scoliosis. Long-term scoliosis causes severe spinal deformity and seriously affects the development of other internal organs such as the lungs and chest, causing respiratory failure," Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Ngoc Son, Head of the Department of Spinal Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, noted.
People who have to sit a lot are also at higher risk of developing thrombosis. This harmful effect of sitting a lot occurs because sitting for a long time causes blood clots and thrombosis to form in the legs. The disease will be more serious if these blood clots appear and rupture in the lungs.
According to Medlatec Hospital, in addition, people who often sit a lot have a higher risk of urinary diseases than normal; women have a higher rate than men. The main reason is that sitting in one place for too long makes the body less active, poor blood circulation in the body along with urine retention increases the risk of bladder infection.
Doctor Tran Thu Nguyet, Institute of Applied Medicine, shared that to improve health when having to sit a lot, you need to move more during the day, not sit in one place when working, studying, talking...
Stand up and stretch every half hour, touch your toes; walk around the office. Stand instead of sitting at your desk or study table for a few moments during the day. Do some simple exercises during breaks.
