Ads keep the internet free while still allowing creators to make money. But ad blockers are getting in the way, and YouTube is now testing blocking users who have them enabled.

Earlier this week, a user reported on Reddit that he discovered that Google's video network was popping up a warning window that said ad blockers were not allowed.

A user has discovered that YouTube is testing a ban on ad blockers.

Admins on the Reddit group were told by the video network's staff that this was a test.

The announcement comes as a surprise because YouTube hasn’t addressed ad blocking for years. The video network has previously said it opposes the idea of adding systems to prevent the use of ad blockers.

Ad-blocking programs and browsers have cut off revenue from videos, while YouTube still has to pay for the ever-increasing storage and bandwidth of that content.

Still, user frustration is growing. YouTube has dramatically increased its advertising in recent years, while its paid version is unaffordable for casual viewers.
