Eliminate many self-opened paths across the railway in Quang Ngai

Many self-opened paths and railway crossings that do not ensure traffic safety have been handled by Quang Ngai province, removed, and solid barriers installed.

Faced with the complexity of self-opened paths across the railway and the risk of accidents, the functional sector of Quang Ngai, the Traffic Police Department and the Railway sector have stepped in and handled the situation. As a result, many self-opened paths and trails have been barricaded and sealed to prevent people and vehicles from passing through.

Duc Pho town is a locality with a railway line running through it with a length of 49km, the longest in Quang Ngai province. Through a survey, the functional sector recorded 24 self-opened paths. Specifically, the communes and wards including Pho Phong, Pho Thuan, Pho Ninh each have 1 self-opened path; Pho Cuong, Pho Chau communes and Pho Khanh ward have 2-5 paths. Pho Khanh commune alone has the most with 11 self-opened paths.

Most of these self-opened paths are illegal, making it unsafe for people to move around, posing a high risk of traffic accidents involving the railway.

At the beginning of 2025, the Duc Pho town government and the Traffic Police Department - Ministry of Public Security, the railway industry and communes and wards with railways surveyed, evaluated and closed these self-opened paths.

Accordingly, unsafe locations have been closed by authorities, preventing people and vehicles from passing through. Seven self-opened paths through Km 958+102 (Pho Phong), Km 959+450 (Pho Thuan), Km 976+700 (Pho Cuong), Km 979+015, Km 979+140, Km 983+490 (Pho Khanh), Km 989+460 (Pho Thanh) have been closed.

Previously, at the end of 2024, along the railway line through Quang Ngai province, the authorities also organized to close and seal many other self-opened paths through this province.

For example, in the section passing through Nghia Hanh district, the authorities buried concrete stakes and welded iron bars across the self-made path at Km 937+600 in Hiep Pho Trung village and Km 937+810 in Hiep Pho Nam village (Hanh Trung commune, Nghia Hanh district).

For the section through Mo Duc district, it was recorded that, immediately after the direction, at the self-opened path through Km 944+615, workers brought two concrete pillars to dig and bury them deep, and at the same time used iron bars painted with bright warning colors to weld and reinforce between the iron bars to create a "fence" to prevent people from driving motorbikes through.

Similarly, at Km 944+860 (Chu Tuong village, Duc Hiep commune), Km 947+910 (Phuoc Luong village, Duc Hoa commune), Km 953+550 (Chau Me village, Duc Phong commune)... there is also the above solution, the self-opening path has been sealed.

Contribute to reducing traffic accidents

According to railway statistics, in early 2024, the North-South railway section through Quang Ngai province, about 100km long, has more than 80 self-opened crossings and unsafe level crossings. In particular, the self-opened crossing system poses many risks, with a high risk of railway accidents.

Immediately after the warning from the authorities, Quang Ngai province directed localities to take action, review, evaluate and coordinate with relevant units, especially the Traffic Safety Committee of localities where railways pass through, to plan to remove, close and strictly prohibit people from traveling through.

Vice Chairman of Duc Pho Town People's Committee Vo Thanh Hung said that removing the self-made railway crossing is a necessary action to ensure the safety of people's property and lives. At the same time, it prevents accidents from happening, thereby contributing to ensuring security, order and traffic safety in the area.

Trails and openings across railways have limited visibility and steep slopes, so the risk of accidents is very high.

In addition to the group of closed passages, in the second quarter, the locality will continue to close the remaining 6 self-opened passages through Km 965+300 (Pho Ninh), Km 978+645, Km 979+780 (Pho Khanh), Km 986+030 (Pho Thanh), Km 991+500, Km 993+380 (Pho Chau).

As for the remaining 11 self-opened paths, by 2025, the locality will completely resolve, close them, and regularly inspect the roads, preventing people from opening new paths.

The spontaneous and illegal opening of railway crossings, without any guards or traffic lights, without barriers... people participating in traffic through these crossings when trains pass by are very likely to have traffic accidents. Therefore, the determination of the Quang Ngai government and related units to eliminate them to prevent accidents is a requirement that needs to be implemented soon.

A representative of the Quang Ngai Traffic Safety Committee said that to ensure railway traffic safety and eliminate self-opened paths, localities need to take drastic action. However, in addition to closing paths, propaganda and dissemination of laws on traffic safety and order to the people are also emphasized.

At the same time, it is necessary to propose plans to build feeder roads to ensure people's travel. For legal passages, it is necessary to install signs, barriers, signal lights, etc. When the tasks are implemented together, closing the self-opening passages will be effective. From there, it will contribute to ensuring better railway traffic safety and order.

In addition to the self-opened paths in the middle of the fields, many self-opened paths across the railway adjacent to National Highway 1 pose a great risk of accidents, and closing them is a solution that Quang Ngai province is determined to implement.

Nguyen Phong, Deputy Head of the Quang Ngai Traffic Safety Committee, said that most of these paths are small, narrow, steep, and have limited visibility, so the risk of accidents is high. To enhance the safety of railway traffic through the area, local authorities are requested to continue to review and resolutely eliminate them.

For road and railway intersections under local management, paint lines, signs, and speed bumps should be added to enhance the guidance and warning effects in the area.
