As the enterprise with the largest and most modern telecommunications infrastructure in Vietnam, Viettel owns 4 submarine optical cable lines and 2 international terrestrial cable lines. When the submarine optical cable has a problem, there are 2 submarine optical cable lines including AAE-1 line to Singapore and IA line to Hong Kong (China), in which the IA cable line is the only line that Viettel has ever exploited.

To ensure annual bandwidth growth and ensure backup for the number of submarine optical cables that are frequently broken, from now until 2030, Viettel will deploy 4 more submarine cables, of which the ADC line has completed the deployment and is expected to be put into operation in 2023. This cable line increases by 18Tbps, tripling the current capacity (currently nearly 9Tbps).

In addition, the unit always reserves 40% of international capacity to prepare for cable breaks. When there is a high load phenomenon, the information technology systems built by Viettel will automatically balance the load, route and regulate the capacity on the remaining submarine cables and land cables.

According to statistics, every year Vietnam experiences about 10 submarine cable breaks, with an average duration of 1 month. Because repairing submarine optical cables is very complicated and requires permission to enter the countries where the cables pass, usually only 3/5 lines operate simultaneously. That is also the reason why Viettel always maintains at least 40% of international connection capacity as a reserve, accepting increased investment costs as well as loading for the operating force.

It is expected that APG will be the first cable line to be restored in March 2023, helping to restore 25% of international connection capacity for Viettel.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Thang, Director of the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Information and Communications, said that with the continuous failure of 4 submarine optical cable lines causing partial or complete loss of capacity on the line, all businesses were affected. In the face of such serious incidents, Viettel's services were basically still guaranteed even during peak hours, helping to ensure outstanding service quality.

Notably, the group of customers using leased channels, 3G and 4G data are not affected because they have been configured as priority in advance. As soon as there is an incident, 30% of the international transmission capacity will be added./.
