Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) President Tran Quoc Tuan hopes coach Kim Sang-sik will lead the Vietnamese team to win the 2024 AFF Cup instead of the previous goal of winning medals.
The Vietnamese team has just concluded its journey in the 2nd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup. These two matches also marked the debut of coach Kim Sang-sik. Although they could not go far, the "golden star warriors" have left some positive signs under the new Korean coach.
Talking about the recent journey of the Vietnamese team, VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan shared in a meeting with reporters on the afternoon of June 18: “I was the one who directly accompanied the Vietnamese team to Iraq. This was a very difficult match for the players because the weather in Iraq was very hot, not to mention the home team had 22 players playing abroad. The fact that the Vietnamese team had a very beautiful goal by Tuan Hai is also noteworthy.”
The head of VFF also shared that after the first two matches of coach Kim Sang-sik, in which 1 win and 1 draw, the Vietnamese team will aim for the AFF Cup 2024 with the determination to reach the final: “I joked with the players that the Vietnamese team won the AFF Cup after a 10-year cycle, 2008 and 2018. Now we are trying to do that in 6 years.
Of course, to win the championship, you need more luck. But we see the desire and dedication of the players. I believe the Vietnamese team will regain confidence and bring joy to the fans."
Previously, at the launching ceremony and signing of the contract with coach Kim Sang-sik in May, VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu said that the goal VFF set for the Korean strategist was to lead the Vietnamese team to the final of the AFF Cup 2024. Specifically, he shared: "From the AFF Cup 2018 to now, the Vietnamese team has continuously reached the final. The goal VFF set for coach Kim Sang-sik is to at least reach the final of the AFF Cup 2024, aiming for the championship".
Before officially entering the AFF Cup 2024, the Vietnamese team will gather twice according to the FIFA Day's schedule in September and November. This will be an opportunity for coach Kim Sang-sik to review the squad as well as have the best preparation for the most anticipated playground in Southeast Asia.
