After the failure at the 2023 Asian Cup, coach Philippe Troussier faced heavy pressure from public opinion. However, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) affirmed that it continues to trust and accompany the French coach.
VFF Vice President Nguyen Xuan Vu said that the goal set for Mr. Troussier is to pass the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup. In case the task is not completed, VFF will have a solution.
" The goal set by VFF is to achieve success in the World Cup qualifiers, specifically success in the two matches in March with Indonesia. In case the goal is not achieved, VFF will sit down and work with Mr. Troussier ," Mr. Vu shared.
Mr. Vu also tactfully refused to say whether VFF could fire Troussier or not.
In the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup, the Vietnamese team is temporarily in second place in the group with 3 points, behind Iraq with 6 points. If they win against Indonesia in the two matches in March, the opportunity to continue will be open for the Vietnamese team. Therefore, the VFF will provide maximum support to the head coach to have the best preparation.
" The Vietnam national team is not the private property of VFF or coach Troussier, but the property of the nation. We will work with the clubs to help the team have the best squad, before entering the World Cup qualifying matches next March ," said the VFF Vice President.
Mr. Vu emphasized that, to achieve the goal of passing the second round of the World Cup and winning a medal at the AFF Cup, VFF and the team need the joint contribution of the media, fans, and players. VFF will discuss with Mr. Troussier about the perspective on the media. At the 2023 Asian Cup, this coach was upset that the Vietnamese media did not recognize the progress of the team, criticizing based on the emotions of the fans.
" During the 2023 Asian Cup, many public opinions were directed towards the team's unsuccessful results. We identified two main media areas: mainstream media and social media. VFF will discuss so that the head coach can have a more correct view ," said Mr. Vu.
