According to Engadget , this person shared a screenshot of the phone's settings menu, showing that the Google app was draining the Pixel 16 Pro's battery in the background even if they hadn't touched the phone for an hour.

Users suspect the problem originated from the Google app's servers

A survey on Reddit and Google's support forums shows that many other Pixel users are also experiencing similar issues.

One Reddit user said: " It just started yesterday. This is because of the high battery usage from the Google app. I just did a factory reset, reinstalled almost everything and it's still happening. In addition to the battery draining quickly, the phone is getting very hot so I know that's causing damage to the battery and likely the CPU as well ."

Some users who have contacted Google have reported that the company's support staff has been of no help. Some have said that rolling back to an older version of the Google app has not fixed the issue. According to one Reddit user, the older version from May 10th is still draining the battery. Meanwhile, an Engadget reader suspects that it may be a server-side issue, with the Google app consistently draining the battery regardless of version, even after rolling back to the version released on May 1st.

Google has yet to comment on the issue, but if the company's app is at fault, it wouldn't be the first time a software update has caused headaches for Pixel users. This month, Google had to patch a bug with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro after a previous update caused the phones to produce much weaker haptic feedback.
