At the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) contributed AED 1 million (CHF 240,000), equivalent to more than US$ 270,000, to help least-developed countries (LDCs) participate in the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC13) taking place from 26 to 1 March in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The contribution helps the Governments of the least developed countries to cover travel expenses such as airfares and accommodation. This contribution has been paid into the LDC Trust Fund. This fund is established for each WTO Ministerial Conference. Many WTO members contribute to this fund.

The 13th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC13) is being held in the UAE. The Closing Session of the Conference is expected to take place at 2:00 p.m. today, March 1, UAE time, which is 5:00 p.m. Vietnam time.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala thanked the UAE for enabling LDC Governments to participate and engage effectively at MC13. This will contribute to making the discussions there more inclusive – a prerequisite for delivering results that improve the lives of people around the world.

Supporting the full participation of least developed countries in the WTO and global trade is an investment in a more inclusive, equitable and prosperous world for all, said Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for International Trade, Ministry of Foreign Trade of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Chairman of MC13.

Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi called on the global trade community to come together to facilitate the participation of all WTO members at the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference in the UAE.

On February 29, the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference entered its final scheduled day, but the 164 WTO member countries failed to reach consensus on key issues such as: Fishing subsidies, agriculture and the postponement of tariffs on digital transactions...

For this reason, the Closing Session of the Conference has been postponed. As planned, before the Closing Session of the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference, an informal meeting of Heads of Delegation will take place today between 11am and 12pm to provide documents and future WTO action plans.

And the period from the end of the informal meeting to the Closing Session is to give the Heads of Delegation enough time to study and review draft documents and materials.

The official closing session of the MC13 Conference is scheduled to begin today, Friday, March 1, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. UAE time, which is 5:00 p.m. Vietnam time.
