On the first day of the 2023 AFC U-17 Championship, host Thailand U-17 faced Laos U-17 at Pathum Thani Stadium. The team from the land of the golden pagodas struggled to win all 3 points in the opening match against an opponent that was considered inferior.

Accordingly, U.17 Thailand took the lead 1-0 quite early in the 12th minute thanks to Dutsadee. However, U.17 Laos played with determination and equalized the score in the 26th minute with a goal by Peeter.

During the remaining official time of the match, the two teams played a tug of war but could not find any more goals. When it seemed that the match had ended in a 1-1 draw, U.17 Thailand unexpectedly scored against U.17 Laos in the 90+5 minute with a goal by Chanothai. Thereby, the team from the land of the golden pagodas won a thrilling victory with a score of 2-1 and had a smooth opening match with 3 full points.

Previously, also in the match in Group A of the 2023 AFC U-17 Championship, U.17 Yemen easily won against U.17 Malaysia with a score of 4-0. Thus, U.17 Yemen took the top spot in Group A with 3 points and a goal difference of +4. Meanwhile, host U.17 Thailand ranked second in the group, with 3 points but was inferior to U.17 Yemen in terms of goal difference (+1).
